PLOWING THE OLD WAY -- Roy Pattison on the plow and Bill Dale holding the reins made a good try at plowing with a team of draft horses at the Huron County Plowing Match on Saturday. Mr.. Pattison and Mr. Dale are both former Huron County wardens and competed in the match held at present warden Bill Elston's Morris Township farm. Correspondent Mrs. Mac Engel W.M.S. of Knox Church Mrs. Leslie Knight was hostess for the regular monthly meeting of the Women's Missionary Society of Knox Church when 14 members and 2 visitors attended. the devotions were based on Genesis 1 and emphasized the Creation. Mrs. Knight opened • with a reading, prayer and singing, "God who made the Earth". The devotions were presented in a new way with illustrations using slides, adding new meaning to this Scripture. "All things bright and beautiful" was sung, followed by the business presided over by President Mrs. Earl. Dunn. The Secretary read an invitation to the 90th Anniversary of Shakespeare Presbyterian Church on Thursday, September 26th. Announcements were also made of the Fall Conference at St. Marys on October 9 and the „Fall Executive at Stratford on October 16. An encouraging report was given by the t reasurer, Mrs. JackKnight. The roll call was a verse on "school" or "knowledge". Mdiibers reported sending 17 cards and making 15 visits. Mrs': Stuart Stevenson chose for her topic the Shepherd's Psalm and gave many new and interesting ideas linking our every day living with this psalm. Mrs. McTavish, Gadshill, the Presbyterial visitor was present d brought greetings from Stratfor Presbyterial, also discussed several topics of interest to, the work of the W.M.S. Closing hymn was "From Ocean Unto Ocean". The host css was' assisted by Mr s. Schnock and Mrs. Stuart McNair in serving lunch. Personals Mr. and Mrs. St anley Fischer and Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Thomas attended the 90th Birthday party for their • Uncle Charles Fischer of Kitchener. It was held at the home of his granddaughter in London on September 8. Mr. Fischer was a former resident of this community. Mrs..Douglas Purdy'is spending awhile in Collingwood with her Recent investigations carried out by the OPP at Wingham Detachment include:: Five charges laid and five persons charged under the LiqudY Control Act. Eight charges laid and seven warnings issued under the Highway Traffic Act, Thirty-one other investigations. On Wednesday, September 11, Doreen A. Bowers of R.R.#2, Wallenstein, was injured, as well as a passenger, Patrick Altman of R.R.#2, Mildmay, in a single car accident on Huron County Road #12, south of Concession 8, Morris. Damages to the Bower's vehicle were estimated at $1,000.00. Rae Breckenridge of Bluevale struck and killed one cattlebeast and injured one on Sideroad 15 - 16 , north of Concession 1 - 2, Morris. The beasts were owned by Lloyd Taylor, also of Bluevale. Damages to the Breckenridge vehicle were estimated at $200,00. On Friday, September 13, Kenneth Harrison of Gorrie, was involved in a single car collision on Highway #4, north of the Wingham N. Limits,Turnberry Township. There were no injuries, and damages were estimated at $200.00. Glen Thompson of London, were Douglas Carter of Bluevale and involved in a two car collision 04 Highway #87 at the junction of Huron Road 12, There were no injuries, and damages were estimated at $2000.00, Charges are pending, On Saturday, September 14, Pearl Wheeler of Wingham Lloyd C. Smith of R.R.81, • Formosa, and David. J. Waechter of R.R.#4, Walkerton were of Huron Road #20, Morris Township. There were no injuries, and total damages were estimated at $600.00. Charges are: pe Joseph Dietrich of Parkhill and Mark Armstrong ofBelgrave were involved in a two car collision on Highway #4, south of the junction of Huron Road #20, No one was injured and total damages were , estimated at $600.00. Charges are pending. Cathryn L. McArter of Brussels was involved in a single car accident in the Village of Brussels. The minutes of June meeting and treasurer's report were read by Miss Laura Lucas, Secretary-treasurer. The H istorical Society will meet Sept. 23 in Dashwood and Oct. 21 in Seaforth. Majestic will host Huron County Fall Rally to be held hi Brussels, Monday, October 7 in St. John's Anglican Church. Everyone will bring sandwiches and squares for the noon meal. During business it was decided to purchase 25 Institute plates for sale. Plans were made for a banquet hi November to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the branch. Leona Armstrong and Marie McCutcheon are in charge of an exhibit for Brussels Fair. The program on Citizenship and WOrld Affairs was in charge of Leona Connelly and Ila McLarty '. The roll call gave sonic suggestions for helping welfare recipients. The motto was well taken by Leona Armstrong on "Be a live wire and you won't get stepped on". Mrs. Clark Matheson gave a well prepared paper on "Retirement". Early retirement may lead to double vocation or retraining. We should be willing to pass on to others what we've learned. if we can be a friend to others we help them and avoid loneliness ourselves, she said. Miss Anaa Lee Stevenson, Cranbrook, who won a trip to the United Nations and New York in a public speaking competition, gave an interesting account of her trip and showed slides. She was thanked by Ila McLarty and presented with a gift. "Happy Birthday" was sung for Mrs. Elsie Shaw.
