THE- BRUSSELS PbStiftEPTEMBER•11 1974- 5 Pp grants to Agricultural Societies It seems that farmers always ave been at the bottom of the eap. Hundreds of years ago an glish king decided to help the 114 wool industry. So at an any stage government ecognized that agriculture is of tal importance to a nation. The elp given was however some- hat unusual and didn't cost his overnment a nickel. He simply ade a decree that all dead had to buried in woollen shrouds. is was designed to help not just e sheep farmer, but maybe ore important to him, the wool ctories. Shirleyan English, a food reporter has pointed out that except for those consumers on fixed incomes, most households are not cutting out food luxuries to keep their weekly budget costs down. If they are not cutting down, then they can't be hurting. It strikes me that all these bitter attacks on the Canadian Egg Board are directed against something faceless. What's a Board? It has no personality, no sex. It is an "it". The farmers are not blamed for anything, but they elected this Board system. If anyone of my readers ever was involved in the initial organization of a church, a club or group, it must be acknowledged that mistakes were made and for some years afterward the constitution and regulations are being changed to correct these mistakes. Why don't the critics of the egg board give them a chance to iron out any difficulties that arose? Their greatest sin so far seems to have been that the rules allowed the production of too many eggs which cost the egg producer dearly. But a price has never yet been increased because of over production. weighing 935 lbs. sold for 47.35, with his offering of 14 heifers averaging 910 lbs. selling for 47.20. Ontario's Agricultural Societies will Nye a broader base to work from as a result of the passing of the Agricultural Societies Amendment Act, 2974, during the last session of the Ontario Legislature. The Hon.. VVilliamA, Stewart, Ontario's Minister of Agriculture and Food, in commenting on Bill 21 said: "Agricultural Societies are becoming increasingly important in rural Ontario communities and we felt the amended Act would recognize and expand the scope of the societies' impact in the community. "One of the new categories under the amended Act will provide individual society grant of one-third of the cost up to $500 for the holding of entertainment programs based on local talent as opposed to imported performers. With the increasing enthusiasm for local amateur programs we saw the need for additional funds for this useful community function. In keeping with the broadening influence of the Agricultural New land branch established A new Food Land Development Branch will be formed within the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. "This Branch will serve all those matters within the Ministry involving land use. It will promote our policy, as a Ministry, of retaining in food production, wherever possible and practical, agricultural lands • which have a high capability for this use," said Agriculture Minister William A. Stewart. In early 1974, an ad hoc Food Lands Development Committee was established within the Ministry to serve as an interim voice during Government discus- sions and planning decisions on land use. "It has become increas- ingly important for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food to have a strong voice in the land use policies of the Ontario Government. The new Branch will provide an effective and tangible unit through which to express public concerns on land use.{' the development of th use.{' Ministry's land use program, members of the Branch will coordinate, develop and refine its long-range land use policy and policy alternatives. They will also analyze land use legislation and programs in other jurisdictions with a view to providing policy alternatives for Ontario. In making the announcement. Mr. Stewart added, "The new Branch will continue to coordinate the Ministry's significant role in the interim management of Govern- ment-owned land in order to encourage food production on land best suited for this purpose. We see the Branch becoming increasingly active in providing inputs to the proposed projects of other agencies involved with land." The interim Food Lands Development Committee will continue to operate until the new Branch Director and the appro- priate professional and support staff are acquired. Coining under the Production and Rural Development Division of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the new Branch will be located at the Ministry's offices at 1200 Bay Street, Toronto, Ont.
