Botulism
can kill
In 1963, two teenage brothers
living in Montreal made
sandwiches for their lunches from
commercially canned liver paste.
Without knowing it, they spread
death on bread.
The older brother ate four
sandwiches and the younger, who
complained the liver paste had a
bad flavor, ate three mouthfulls of
his lunch.
That night, the boy who ate the
four sandwiches became weak,
had trouble swallowing and
urinat ed frequently.
The symptoms became worse,
He saw the family doctor the next
night. The boy needed help to
stand.
Next morning he was dead in
his room.
Shortly after his brother's
death, the younger boy
complained of weakness,
dizziness and problems
swallowing. Soon, he received
and antitoxin and avoided the fate
of his brother.
The brothers contracted
botulism, a type of food poisoning
which kills about 60 per cent of its
victims.
The liver paste they ate was
part of a large batch traced by
health authorities. They
destroyed it.
Cases of 'botulism in recent
years are rare, but st atistics from
the past show that most poisoned
persons ate food prepared at
home rather than at a commercial
cannery.
Between 1899 and 1943, 404
outbreaks were reported in
Canada and the United States. Of
the 1,125 cases reported, 732
persons died. Commercially
prepared foods caused 50
poisonings while home-canned
foods 315 cases.
