Union Carbide went on strike
and it cost the farmer money.
That may sound, strange at first
glance, If the grain handlers
strike or the meat packers it is
obvious that this will have a
depressing effect on those
commodities. Well, Union
Carbide makes most of the
castings for sausage and when
they went on strike the packers
curtailed the buying of sows with
a resultant drop in prices.When
facilities at the packers are sitting
idle it cost him money, so he
passes this loss on to the
consumer in the form of a small
increase on all his products. So a
seemingly unrelated strike in
industry makes for a loss to the
farmer and a higher price to the
consumer.
I saw a picture recently of a
loin of a hog of eight years ago
and one of this year. The
difference is truly amazing. While
the old loin was almost half fat the
new one had only a very small rim
of this. It shows clearly what
great improvement has been
made over the last few years to
improve the quality of pork. The
Canadian hog has been truly
To many farmers in Ontario,
increasing the size of the farm
usually means there is a need to
switch to bigger machinery in
order to be efficient.
"The delays in receiving larger
horsepower tractors from
manufacturers has led some
fanners CO increase the horse-
power in their present tractors,"
says H.E. Wright, -Secretary-
manager of the Farrn Machinery
Beard.

Here is a quote from The
National Hog Farmer, an
American magazine: "Many of us
who are making the most 'noise
about the middle man and about
food prices could well paraphrase
that oft .quoted comment of
Pogo's. about pollution: "We have
the middleman, and he is us."
That ghostly middleman is the
packinghouse worker. He's the
retail store employee. He's the
truck driver, the waitress, the
baker, the frozen pie maker,
Labour makes up nearly half —
48% of the marketing charges on
food. Hourly labour costs of the
food marketing firms increased
70% since 1962. Part of that
increase was reduced by
increased output per man-hour,
reducing the additional labour
cost per unit of product marketed
to 47%. But that increase was not
achieved by working faster or
harder, kwas achieved by large
expendifiires for new plants and
facilities to a total of more than 3
billion in 1973 alone. Corporate
profits before taxes rose ,no more

workhorse, farmers should
proceed with caution.
For example, getting more fuel
to the engine can he done by
adjusting the fuel pump on a
diesel tractor. This increases fuel
delivery by about 25 percent.
"However, the price of this
extra power may be as much as a
40 pettent increase in fuel
consumption,'' warns Mr.
Wright. Other problems, includ-
ing "excessive smoke, crankcase
dilution, overheating acid cylinder
dal-nage ;'may also result.
Minister of Transportation and
Communications ,John R. Rhodes
has announced 'details of the
Motor Vehicle Inspection
program coming into effect the
first of September..
Under the new program, a
Safety Standards Certificate can
be issued only by licenced Motor
Vehicle Inspection Stations, and.
each inspection of a used vehicle
must be. carried out by a mechanic
registered with the Ministry.
The Safety Standards
certificate will replace the
Certificate of Mechanical Fitness
now in use.
In Ontario, a motor vehicle
must undergo an inspection of its
safety related components prior
to resale or transfer of ownership.
It is estimated that approximately
one-third of the vehicles in the
province is inspected each year
under this program.
hi making the announcement,
Mr. Rhodes said, "The purpose
of this program is not to take cars
off the road, but to have
mechanicol defects corrected at
the time of resale, resulting in
safer vehicles on our provincial.
roadways,"
There will be approximately
550 licenced stations throughout
the province, mainly at service
stations and car dealerships.
Each station will be inspected
prior to the issuing of a licence to
ensure sufficient space, tools and
equipment are available to
properly complete the safety
standards inspection.
Mr. Rhodes indicated, "The
new program is designed to
provice a uniformly high standard
of inspection throughout the
province and to insure the public
that both the mechanic and the
station producing the certificate
meet the standards established
by the Ontario Government.
If your tractor has been
designed for it, a turbo-charget
may be added to boost
horsepower by 50 percent.
However, farmers, should never
use a turbo-charger on an engine
not designed fot Such options, as
it can seriously affect
performance.
Before you start boosting your
tractor's power, remember that
all of these conversions cart create
problems with cooling,
lubriCation and operation of the
valves and nistonS.
