Quality of entries was similarly
very uniform. On a scale of one to
seven, they all fell within a range
of five to 61/2 . Twelve entries
scored 61/2 .
Three finalists slowly rose to
the top of the heap: entries from
Ruth E.Kaulback (Bridgewater

Using
electricity wisely
isn't just a matter
of avoiding waste.
Being watcWul to avoid the
frittering away of kilowatthours is
pveryone's concern, in the inter-
est of economy and conservation
of valuable energy resources.
But for some people, living in
older homes with outdated wiring,
restricted use of appliances is not
always a matter of choice. They
do not have sufficient circuits to
serve normal needs without
resorting to 'octopus' outlets and
extension cords. The result:
overloading and blowing of fuses.
These conditions also tend to
diminish the performance of
appliances and shortens their life.
Inadequate' wiring is not only
inconvenient, it can be a safety
hazard. If you have any doubts
about the capacity of your home's
wiring, have it checked by a
qualified Electrical Contractor.
Then, use .k
electricity %
wisely. . . 4j.
and safely. 04 •

the Paper kept us up-to-date on
every upcoming music shop,
drama or poetry presentation.
As we were just furnishing our
home, the "want ads" provided
us with sources of innumerable
items. Also, on Wednesdays,
when the paper is distributed, it
is not uncommon to see fellow
housewives shopping in local
grocery stores armed with the'
sales merchandise section of the
paper.
One item I would not like to see
eliminated is the weekly picture
on the editorial page - it always
de-picts a local scene, either
painting, sketch or drawing,
which I would cut out and enclose
with letters overseas.
Another disappointmerit is that
many news items never find their
way to print, and these
unpublished discoveries can only
be made over a cup of tea.
The paper, however, should be
congratulated on its fine artwork,
layout and number of excellent
reporters and staff. It tries to be
represented at almost every event
taking place in town and emulates
the good aspects of a big city
newspaper.
What does the North Renfrew
Time mean to me? When I first
came to this small town it was my
life-source, helping to ease the
frustration and loneliness
acquired through transposition. I
used to sit home day after day,
feeling sorry for myself, but
thankfully, I discoverd the paper
and began reading it as an active
part of everyday life. I feel as if I
had just begun to be "me" and
what crowned by new depths and
creativity was found one day,
under the "Birth" section of the
paper...my first child was born...
it seemed as if the whole world
knew and heard, and since then
my feelings of loneliness never
lingered...I like ' the North
Renfrew Times as it is and would
never be without.
JUDGE'S COMMENTS
As an editor, I envy and admire
the sure touch for their readers
enjoyed by the editors and
publishers of community
newpapers. Quite obviously they
understand the real nature of
their readers and fellow citizens.
From west coast to east, the
hundred entries in the CCNA
contest almost all made the same
points:
-the community paper covers the
new,s4hat matters to people--what
manse in Listowel by the late Rev.
E.B.Edwards. They spent their
honeymoon at the Queens Hotel
in Listow4
For the next two years the
couple lived in 4,istowel where
Mr. Speiran worked in the
Arlington Hotel.
On July 26, 1924 the couple
departed for Michigan where Mr.
Speiran became an employee for
General Motors. They resided in
Michigan until retiring to Florida
two years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Speiran have a
family of one daughter, Mrs. Th-
omas (Sally) Th ompson of
Saginaw, Mich., and one son
Keith Ross of Mt. Morris, Mich.,
and four grandchildren:
The couple ' enjoy fishing
together and Mr. Speiran enjoys
hobby4crafts while his wife enjoys
activities With the Grandmothers'
Club of the mobile park in which -
they live in Florida.
Both Mr. and Mrs. Speiran also
enjoy good health,
