Store operated until that time by the late Gar Smith and in late years by the late Wm„ Smith. Now seven years later to the day, the public had its first glimpse of the entirely new
Canadian Tire outlet which Mr.
Tilley has established to serve
Seaforth and area,
While the:' official opening of
the new Canadian Tire Store is
not to take place until today,
Thursday, the public was admitted
last Wednesday.
Since Gar Smith brought
Canadian Tire to Seaforth in 1950 the business has experienced a continued growth which has necessitated a series of enlargements. In recent years growth had accelerated to a point where the present site could not accommodate further expansion. The alternative was a new site
and new building.
Canadian Tire chose the then
vacant Boshart factory on
South Main Street at Crombie
Street. When architects and
engineers and store arrangement
specialists had satisfied
themselves that the factory could
be converted to a store meeting
Canadian Tire standards, Mr.
Tilley entered into negotiations to purchase the property. Before it was possible to complete the purchase it was necessary to arrange for a zoning change which was worked out with the town and subsequently given municipal board approval. The new building provides
more than 6000 square feet retail
space on the second floor. On the
ground floor a fully equipped
service area occupies 4000 feet,
the remainder of the ground area
being devoted to stock storage.
The third floor provides staff
facilities. offices and additional
warehousing. In all the building
provides more than 10000 feet of
storage space- which permits maintenance of a full stock of literally thousands of items. A large elevator serves the three floors making possible a ready flow of items from storage to retail. Entrance to the new store is on
the north side readily accessible
to customers who approach from
Main Street as well as those who
drive to the store and take
advantage of the large parking lot
adjoining on the east of the
building and extending to Victoria
Street. Entrance to the new
service area is from the parking
lot..
