Education learned at their August
meeting on Monday. Following
an • offhand comment by
Allan,' one of the four
Superintendents of Education,
that many boards were having
problems . getting teachers,

those who have been unable to
get teaching jobs should hear
this", the trustee from R.R.2,
Lucknow, said.
VY hile teaching summer school
recently Mr. Allan said, he had
talked to quite a number of
principals who had not been able
to fill all the vacancies on their
staffs. "There are a large number
of jobs not filled in Western
Ontario," he said.
"It's a generalized problem"
he said "but of course as the jobs
become more specialized they are
more difficult to fill."

disciplined in matters of safety.
Before venturing into swimmer would be.
unfamiliar waters, check that
there's a firm, safe bottom with
no sudden drop-offs. no rocks
weeds, no strong currents. Above
all, never dive into strange water;
one of the commonest water
accidents is a spinal injury from a
head-on dive into shallow water.
Once. y &Wye made sure that
the swimming area itself' is safe,
don't take the risk of swimming
alone: no matter how strong .a
Swimmer you may be, you could
run into trouble and need help.
Children playing near a pool, a
lake or - the sea should be
supervised at all' times. It's
possible to drown in as little as
three or four inches of water.'The
best precaution is to teach .
• youngsters the basics of' water
safety, and to enrol them in
swimming classes • as early as
possible, Never let non-swimmers
rely on .rafts, inner tubes or
inflatable toys.
There are some other
commonsense precautions for
swimmers .-Wait two hours after
eating before going in the water;
nevery swim after dark-and. don't
be overconfid cut. You may be
able to swim 50 yards out from
the shore, but what about the trip
back?
Avoiding danger in the water is
one thing. But you should also
know something about coping
with it for others: To help
someone in trouble in the water,
you should know how to throw a
lifebelt or rescue line, and how to
give mouth-to-mouth" artificial
respiration. It's worth
