To remedy the problem of the
sunken spots, the club will be
borrowing a machine from the
Goderich bowlers, This machine
has several rows of spikes that
. score the sod as sand is fed in
through the front.
The only other improvement
the club has planned is the
addition of another light in the
center. They found that with
lights only on the sides, shadows
in the center make bowling
difficult.
The problems encountered are
"not that serious but it doesn't
make for good bowling," Mr.
Carter said.
The bowlers also hope to find a
building they can use as a club
house. They already have a stove
and fridge for it. They are now
using the building at the
fairgrounds.
Lawn bowling has been revived
in Brussels, but its growing pains
are going to cut the season short
this year. For the first time since the
bridge over the Maitland was
built on the Main Street lawn
bowling enthusiasts have had
their own greens. Frank Carter,
one of the motiviating forces
behind the club, said that
although land was promised when
the bridge was built, nothing
materialized ,
The pre'sent site is leased from
the fairgrounds. The greens were
built with money raised from an
initiation fee charged to 61
members. Although they all paid,
Mr. Carter says that not all of
them have turned out to play.
The mower, roller, new bowls,
water system, lights and fencing
were all purchased with a New
Horizons Grant. Presently, the
oldest member bowling is 78, but
Mr. Carter would like to see more
senior citizens participate.
After a year of construction,
bowling began July 1. The
greens, however, were not
finished settling and as a result
several spots have sunk. Mr.
Carter said this was not
anticipated as the heavy
machinery used iri the
construction should have tramped
them down.
Bowling will end the beginning
of September, the usual season
lasting until the end of the month.
Given the extra time, the club
hopes the lawn will have a chance
