At a University, volunteers are breathing pollutants while striding along a treadmill in a heated chamber. Experimenters hope •to chart the effects of pollution on work capacity. They will measure oxygen uptake, carbon dioxide production, heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature. According to a physiologist at the University, the study should make it possible to base smog alerts and safety criteria on factual data instead of guesses. For almost two years, the volunteers, have reported regularly to have their physical performances monitored while breathing in simulated smog. Many of the volunteers have refused to accept the hourly compensation provided for by the Teddy, Mr, and Mrs, Gordon Nicholson and family of Morris Twp., Mr. and Mrs. William Gaus and family of Listowel gathered on Sunday at the home of their father Mr. Charles Nicholson to celebrate his birthday. Smoking also appears to lower the level of oxygen in the lungs after exercise. To find out more about how au pollution and smoking affect your lungs and life, contact your Christmas Seal Association.
