hen it comes to farms those
me economic Planners expect

In Canada we have a system of verninent-backed loans- One
these is the farm improvement
h, This would give the lathier a
an for updating his operation at
favourable interest rate, and the
enitnent will guarantee the
lier that he will get his money
kif the farmer is unable to do
The trouble with this scheme is
higher interest rates the
raker can get elsewhere. Why
uld the bank give a loan to the ruler when he can get four
reent More elsewhere for his' Obey? It's just a paper MeaStire thiiiit any 'tooling: in today's
money market.
I'm curiously awaiting what, if
any, program the federal
government will come up with for
young farmers to get started, as
promised during the election.

ft will be good advice to stock
up that freezer with Meat now and
keep it full, for beef and pork
prices are bound to rise. I base
this prediction on the increase in
feed costs. In the last fotir weeks
feed grain prices increased by
21% and soyabean theal prices by
no less than 61%, This can only
mean lower beef and pork
production.
At today's livestock prices it is
just as, or even more profitable to
sell the grain than to feed it to
livestock, at the Same tinie
eliminating the risks connected
with livestock production and the
labour involved.

Today Agriculture Minister
Gene Whelan announced
increases ri the prices for
industrial milk, but the increase is
already eaten up by increased
production cost before it comes
into effect. With climbing feed
costs there is no other way for
dairy prices than to be tied to
production cost.
This has been urged for years
by all farm organizations and if it
is not done soon, we will have no
dairy industry left. After that, the
government will have to subsidize
imported diary products, What
has priority, subsidies to
consumers through Canadian or
through New Zealand farmers?
