The Middle Maitland River is
being polluted by both Brussels
and Listowel, according to a
report released by the Ministry of
environment.
"The untreated municipal-
industrial wastes" are entering
the river through "uncontrolled
municipal and industrial
sewers", according to the report.
Neither Reeve Jack McCutcheon
or Clerk Bill King in Brussels
have seen the report.
Titled "Water Quality of the
Middle Maitland River", the
report details the findings of a
water quality survey conducted
,op the river from Listowel to a
point just upstream from
Wingham during late August and
early September,1972,
According to Reeve
McCutcheon, a preliminary study

was requested from the ministry
in 1971. .
In its recommendations the
report states:
"All uncontrolled municipal
and industrial discharges in
Listowel should be eliminated.
Plans to sewer the remaining
portions of the town should
continue in order to aid in
elimination of these discharges."
"Plans to service the Village of
BrusSels with, a municipal sewer
system and sewage treatment
plant should proceed to eliminate
uncontrolled municipal and
industrial discharge to theMiddle
Maitland River."
Listowel is presently working
on the second stage of a four-
stage sewage program while
Brussels it awaiting final
approval on a $21/4 million sewage
treatment plant.
At a hearing in Brussels in
May, it was thought that if
Brussels goes ahead with the
plant, it could be completed by
1976 or 1977.
Septic tanks sytems now
service residences of Brussels,
and there is some run off into the
Maitland, especially from Main
Street businesses.
Reeve McCutcheon's only
comment was "if what they said
wasn't near right we wouldn't be
considering a 52% million plant."
The report did mention that
Brussels was' planning to service
the community with a sewer
system and a municipal lagoon.
The village council will hold
another meeting soon with the
Department of the Environment
concerning the proposed
treatment plant.

if it was not for individuals and
members of associations who
freely devote time and effort to
the organization of events to take
place in our village, Brussels
would indeed be a very quiet
place on a holiday weekend.
People of this community would
otherwise have td take off for
somewhere else for amusettient.
Thanks goes to those people who
arrange for and work to give
residents of Brussels and area
'entertainment in their own home
town.
