News of Belgrave
Couple celebrates 55th wedding anniversary
Family Affairs is W.I. Topic
The Family Affairs meeting of
the Women's Institute was held
in the W.1. Hall on June 18 with
an attendance of 50. The presi-
dent, Mrs. Stanley Hopper,
opened the meeting, with Mrs.
George Procter at the piano. The
secretary, Mrs. Ross Higgins,
read minutes and the treasurer's
report.
The Memorial Service at
Brandon' Cemetery will be held
Sunday, July 7 at 3 p.m. with the
Anglican Church conducting the
service.
Mrs. Norman Coultes reported
the 74th District Annual with 110
ladies in attendance. There are
eleven branches in West Huron.
The 4-H Club girls and their
leaders were guests.
Carol Walker, a 4-11 Club
member, won Provincial Honours
completing twelve projects which
was presented to her on Achieve-
ment Day. Also, Barbara Moore,
a 4-H Club girl will be a delegate
to attend the 4-I-1 Centennial
Conference at Guelph. There will
be no meeting in July, but it was
agreed to have a penny auction at
the August meeting.
Mrs. Jack Taylor convened the
following program. Roll Call `A
handy trick to prepare a quick
meal. A skit by the 4-H Club
girls. The scene took place in a
beauty salon, they also demon-
strated a Bedroom Boutique and
displayed their record books.
Mrs. Taylor thanked all who took
part.
Mrs. William -Coultes led in a
sing-song.
The collection and pennies for
friendship were received,
Lunch was served by Mrs.
Stewart Procter, Mts. Herb
Wheeler, Mrs. Stan Hopper arid
Mrs. Garner Nicholson.

Mrs. Lewis Stonehouse
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Higgins
of R.R.5, Brussels, celebrated
their 55th wedding anniversary
on Tuesday of last week with a
family dinner at the home of their
son, Jack R. Higgins.
The wedding cake which was
decorated in the emerald and
white colours was on display.
The gifts were opened from the
family and several friends who
dropped in to extend their
congratulations. A special guest
at the gathering was Mrs.
Margaret Kerr of Brussels. She
was the organist at the wedding
55 years ago. Mrs. Kerr played
the traditional wedding music and
was then joined by Gordon
Walker and Carl Fitch with their
harmonicas for several other
,nusical selections.
W.I. Has Bus Trip
Thursday, June 20 was bright
and sunny for the Belgrave W.I.
bus trip. Thirty-four women took
advantage of the trip to visit the
Enchanted Doll House near
Guelph. Here they were ,
privileged to reminisce as they
viewed nine hundred dolls includ-
ing Mother Goose and the
nursery rhymes, stories from the
Bible, dolls from fifty-five coun-
tries, historical - the Kennedys,
Sir Winston Churchill, antique
dolls, ones made of apples,
bread, straw, corn husk and many
more, and an Indian display.
The hostess invited the group
-into her home where her oil
paintings and five quilts were
displayed.
The travellers continued on
their way to the Elora park for
lunch, then to Mill Street, Elora
to the Museum and boutique
shops.
A ,shopping plaza in Guelph
was the last place to call.
Tired in body, but refreshed in
mind the group arrived home in
the early evening.
Wheeler Reunion.
The 8th Wheeler reunion was
held on Sunday, June 23rd, at the
Bel&rave Community Centre, The
Wheelers of Belgrave were in
charge of arrangements. Mrs,
Roas Higgins entertained the.
children outdoors with games
while the adults enjoyed games
and contests indoors conducted
by Mrs. Kenneth Wheeler, Mrs,
Ross Anderson and Doris
Wheeler.
Novelty prizes were awarded to
Mr. and Mrs, Gordon Wheeler of -
Burlington for -being the couple
who . had been married the
longest; -to Mrs. Carrie McLeod.
of Etobicoke for coming the
farthest distance to the reunion;
-to Lloyd Anderson, London, for
having a birthday closest to the
date; -to Wayne Wheeler,
Brussels, for the youngest -
present; and to Mrs. Donna
Shaw, Sharon Shaw and Nancy
Anderson who tied for having the
smallest waist measurement.
Following dinner, Kenneth
Wheeler conducted. a short
business meeting and ,. it was
decided to hold another reunion
in two years with the Wheelers of
London in charge.
Gibson Gathering
About 50 descendants of the
late Jane and Alex Gibson
gathered at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Robert Grasby on Sunday
for a family reunion. Relatives in.
attendance were from St. Cathar-
ines, Hamilton, Port Burwell.
London, 'Fhorndale, Listowel,
Toronto, and Fenlon Falls.
The afternoon was spent play-
ing games and reminiscing after
which a picnic supper was served.
Holds Open House
- On Saturday., June 15, Mrs,
Alex Robertson held an open
house for her daughter Margaret,
when many neighbours, friends,
and -relatives attended. Those
assisting with the trousseau and.
the 'gifts .were Joan Currie,
Marilyn Robertson, Marian
Strauss, Doris Robinson, and
Barbara Black.
Auxiliary Meets
The Belgrave Junior Auxiliary
met in the Orange Hall on
Saturday morning with Kelly
Lotigheed leading in. the games.
The president, Audrey Scott, led
in the opening exercises. Cathy'
Shiell was in charge of the Roll
Call. Minutes of the last meeting
were read by Sheila Anderson.
Julie Gray helped with the
worship.
Cathy Shiell and Patti Edwards
collected the offering and Patti
recited the offertory ► ..ayer. The
treasurer's report was given by
Joan Higgins. Leaders for the
next meeting: games- Patti
Edwards; sing-song- Audrey
Scott; to help with worship- Sheila-
Anderson; clean up girls- Kelly
Lougheed and Cathy Shiell:
The sing song was led by Joan
Higgins.
The girls worked on their
stripes. We had 2 visitors - Sarah
Lougheed and Heather Shiell.

CLARENCE P.CHAMNEY
Clarence Perdue Chamney, 69.
of Belgrave died Monday, June
17 in Wingham and District
Hospital after a long illness,
Born in East Wawanosh Twp.,
he was the son of the late Joseph
Chamney and Sarah Perdue. In
1939, in Dorchester he married
Mary Jane Johnston, Goderich;
In his early years, Mr.
Chamney was an electrician until
he began farming.
He was a member of Calvin
Brick United Church.
Surviving are his wife; two
daughters, Mrs. Clair Rainer,
Scarborough and Mrs. Sandra
McCormack, Orangeville, a sister
Mrs. Lulu MacLaughlin,
Wat export, New York and two
grandchildren.
The late Mr. Chamney rested
at Walker's Funeral Home until
the time of service on June 20.
Burial was in Colborne Cemetery
in Goderich.
