Although the Province's
Ministry of the Environment has
taken over responsibility for
septic tank inspections from the
local health units, home owners in
Huron should still call the local
health unit office when arranging
for a septic tank permit.
In Huron County, local health
inspectors will still approve
applications for installing septic
`antis, but will follow provincial
uidelines, according to :lint
V1eCaul, chief health inspector.
Eventually, provincial
personnel will take over the job,
"We're going to be doing it for
them.for up to three years", Mr.
McCaul told the Ooderich
newspaper.
New provincial legislation is
More. detailed than county
regulations, although similar to
guidelines used by both Huron
and Perth.
While the county allowed for
only two tile bed sizes
governe:Vmt rules call or seven.

septic tanks.
Permits issued by the county
for building septic tanks prior to
April 15 will be valid until
December 1, 1974, Mr. McCaul
said.
Prices for applications are $15
for the general public and $10 per
lot for subdivisions on rural land.
The fees will be collected by the
county. The money will stay in
local coffers.
Provincial authorities will not
collect fees until their own
inspectors are on the job. ,
There Was some confusion at
the county health unit about
licensing contractors .whe build
septic tanks.
New contractors will have to
apply for licenses and pass
examinations.

Speculation exists that because
the new provincial regulations
call for the increased number of
tile bed sizes, the workload, on
county health inspectors will
increase,
County Medical Officer of
Health, Frank Mills, admitted the
possibility but said he has
adopted a "wait and see policy".
He termed one of the provincial
regulations a "backward step",
Leaching pits and cesspools are
now allowed. The county had
banned them. -
They are basically holes iii the
ground at the end of tile beds.
The pits hold excess kitchen
wastes which are not absorbed by
the ground.
Persons now need permits for
chernical toilets and the little
brown shacks out back, Dr. Mills
noted.
While the provincial
regulations are good, county
controls Were acceptable, Dr.
Mills said.
"Local control is still the best

he maintained,
