In 1970 the Mitchell operation
was purchased from
Schonderwoered Bros. and has
been managed by Tony Bouw.
Further expansion of the
company is underway this year
with the opening of a plant at
Granton planned for late August.
Thompsons- has always
maintained a keen interest in
receiving, processing and
merchandising white beans. As
the industry has grown, the latest
facilities and processing
equipment have been added.
Recent expansion has included
corn, sayabean, fertilizers and
other farm chemicals.

The staff at WC, Thompson and Sons LTD., Mitchell
W.G. Thompson Company
in, (Mk :trio for 50 years
This is a double celebration for
the Mitchell division of W. G.
Thompson and Sons Ltd.
The firm is marking, the
completion of expanded facilities
at the No. 8 Highway location in
Hibbert: and at the same time
celebrating the 50th anniversary
of the founding of the business.
It was in February 1924 that
W.G.Thompson, who had been
raised on a farm in the
Palmerston. area, joined as
managing partner with Jack and
Dave McKillop in the purchase of
existing facilities in Blenheim.,
Mr. Thompson at that time was
manager of the Merchants Rank
branch in West. Lorne while the
McKillop brothers. were
successful area farmers. Several
years, later Mr.. Thompson
purchased the interests of the
McKillops
The firm which in, the
beginning had emphasized white
beans, and as well as selling
coal and fuel continued to
expand.
Branches were opened at Kent
Bridge andRodney and in 101 at.
Hensel with George Thompson
as. manager.
The Hensall elevator which was
destroyed, by fire in December
1949 was replaced with enlarged
facilities on a new site and
reopened for business in August
1950.
In 1950 the business was
incorporated as W.G.Thompson
and Sons Ltd. when Wes; and
John Thompson, sons of the
founder joined the firm and today
head the company.
Wesley G.Thompson was
active in politics and tTpresented
the riding of Kent East in the
Legislature from 1943 to 1948. He
died July 25, 1968.
