Brussels Lions are introducing
a new feature into the Polar Daize
Program this year in the form of a
canoe race,
At.the last Lions Club meeting,
at the Presbyterian Church, the
guest was Greg Cowan, a canoe
enthusiast and also a canoe
builder. Mr. Cowan suggested
the club sponsor a canoe race as.
part , of the "Polar Daize"
program and the Lions agreed it
was a good idea,
On Monday evening a
committee of Lions met again
with 'Mr. Cowan and worked out

Twelve charges laid with six

charged under the Criminal Code
of Canada.
On Tuesday, January 29, 1974;
Garry 0. German of Blyth, was
involved in a collision with a
parked vehicle owned by Sheila
M. Henry of R.r.#1,, myth, wh;ch
was parked on Drummond Street,
east of Coomas Street in Blyth.
Total damages were estimated at
$2500:00 and Mr, German was
injured as a result of the accident..
Charges are pending.$
On Thursday, ,January 31,

Fordwich, was involved in a
single car accident on Huron
County Road #30, south of
Concession '6 - 7, Howick
Township. There were no
injuries, and damages were
estimated at $250.00.
On Thursday, January 31,
Leonard W. Lavelie of St. Marys

Brussels, were . involved in . a
car-train collision on Sideroad
15-16 at the X-ing in Grey
Township. Mr. LaVelle was
injured as a result, and damages
were estimated at ,$1200.00.

Mr. Cowan, who has recently
moved to Morris Township, is an
old band at canoe racing. He was
a member of one of the
Centennial Cross-Canada canoe
races. Starting at Rocky Mountain
Hbuse in Alberta the teams
paddled across Canada in 1967,
following the same river as_those
used by the early fur traders,
covering a distance of more than
3000 miles.

While Brussels may lack
industry the village continues to
grow.
In 1973 building permits of
considerable value were issued in
every month of the year except
February, April and August. The
total value of the permits' was
$194,375.00 according to Brussels
clerk Wm. King.
This included four new homes
with a total value $107,000.
The population, is also
increasing. Not'So long ago it was
under 800. It is now 984 '

Brussels. Mr. Schoonbeeck has
obtained similar permits from a
number of area municipalities
and proposes operating an area
wide service.
Council was told there would be
a public hearing which Will be
held in the Court House, Guelph,
February 18th at 8 p.m. to review
the -C.N.R. passenger train
service between Guelph and
Toronto.
