The econo- mists are at it again with sim- plistic paper solutions which do not take into account the hard facts of life. Hon. Eugene Whelan said in a recent, statement in which he connected a report being prepared about Marketing boards. This is his statement: "An associate professor from British Columbia, J.D. Forbes, is making a report about mar- keting boa!rds. The Consumer Councl of Canada is paying $48,700 for this report. my advice to Mrs. Brechin, the President of C.C.C. is that if 46th ANNUAL HURON PLOWING MATCH SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 15 —Commencing at 9:30 a.m.— The Howard Datar s' Farm 1 mile north of DASHWOOD — QUEEN CONTEST -- - Horseshoe Pitching — Admission Free the report follows the line Mr. Forbes is reported to have taken in the press, the study will not be' worth one cent. I have no fear of unprejudiced studies being made on marketing boards. I have stated this in the House before and `T am repeating it now that I am' not worried about well founded and well informed reports. But it is amply evident that economist Forbes has made up his mind before the people doing the study' have had time to assess the field work. " If newspaPer quotes are right this University Professor.:-Will solve Canada's food problems by dumping half of Canada's farmers on welfare. That is utter non-7 sense. He is right about one thing. Farmers 'do want independence. The same type of independence that gives the"m the security of income and stability in, their em- ployment . that unions try to get for their members and that pro- fessors and teachers try to get with university tenure, and pro- fessionals with signed contracts. ' I have heard Mr. Forbes thinks the operation of, marketing boards are a hidden form of wel- fare and that there are twice as many farmers as we need to pro- duce efficiently. with the food shortages in the world and the high prices Canad- ian consumers face, it's no time to be talking about dumping farm- ers on yielfare. I would also like to remind Mr. Forbes that surpluses of cherries , tomatoes and other products have been pro- duced by the most efficient ,and least subsidized farmers in the world this year. Those are the people he would dump on welfare. I hope the study will take note of the fact that products under the control of markuentsdioleigird:4; 'have been less inflationary Eggs marketing, f o i satraence, being those who are not contra 900 111C paneardad,o zwehnileGrwaidthe no in the United'States on the North American rnarket, tlity atbhedaiotnzgiesn.sporIledtviesnatttihne$gnlea.txlip5oinoaititoaaetitoli the consumer by unwarr speculation in spite of the inendous triple increase` poultry feed costs. Again I sal) haveno fear of impartial stud of marketing boards. Butlk: that the President of the Cam is n Consumer Council, Mr Brechin, has presented hot' against the , establishment marketing boards when 'pu hearings on the subject ho taken place. It does not appe to be just a coincidence those who pa y the piper e the tune that' professor For is willing to sing before study is completed next Man Every study of marketing, boards and concrete example of marketing boards that I ha seen has demonstrated that bo farmers and consumers hay benefitted.
