When Jack Mc Cutcheon raced at Delaware in the sixties he brought half of Brussels with him to the race track, according to a recent Lon- don Free Press story. MrMcCutcheon started as a stock car driver in his older brother Casey's car, number 73K. He made the car a consistent winner and developed skill at overdriving in the corners, spinning and coming out full throttle in the same direction without losing much speed. According to spectators at the Delaware oldtimers race, Reeve McCutcheon has not lost his touch. And he has quite a few fans who remember his driving career with interest. The follow- ing is a letter he received re- cently from one of his old fans. August 19, 1973 Dear Jack; "I know I'm about 4 years late in writing a fan letter but I had to congratulate you for your performance in Russ Urlin's car Ho4v to store vegetables batters. Dale ;Iron Arm' Pletch took the loss for the losers. STAR PLAYERS SABRES; Don 4 Rubber Ball" Laurie scored 2 runs for his team on two walks and adouble, STINKERS; Gard 'Almost Mar-, ried' Smith 'scored two runs on a homer, single and double at four trips to the plate. BARONS: Royce 'Long Stripe' Bauer was 5 for 5 at the plate and scored four runs, M.A.S.H.: Brian 'Low Brock' Huether was three for four at the bat for his team and scored two runs. Sunday, August 26th, was the scene for the second gathes of the first round of playoffs, The first game saw the overpowering Barons defeat and oust M.A.S.H. with the score of 30-5. Brian 'Rubber Arm' Rutledge was the winning hurler for the Aris tocrats complimented by a fine defensive game of his teammates. M.A.S.H. is now out of the play- offs, but they can't call their season a total loss, ,for their team almost 'always had a full roster of players and they seemed ' to enjoy the summer very much. last night at Delaware. You had me worried until after the first yellow 'fell and then you didn't disappoint me at all." " When you raced back in the late sixties, I was one of the younger guys that used to loiter around your car when it was in pits. You even drove my soap box derby car at Nilestown one night., I raced go-karts for one summer also. Go-karts were a lot of fun to race, and they're' a lot faster than most people think 60-80 depending on the rear - sprocket:' "After wasting the past two years drag racing, with a 71 Z28, I guesi I'm finally going to put something together for the oval track this winter. I will probably just be a rat racer for the first year, but I've got to start somewhere. If No. 73 Is available it will be on my car. It will be red and white for sure, because I'm an appren- tice bodyman and I'll be naintinic The second game was a real barnstormer. The Sabres even- tually defeated the wee Stinkers 27-18 but from the Start it:looked like a rout for the other side. At the end of the third inning the score ' was 15-2 for the srnewes. But then the bats of the Sabres came alive and the pitchers of the losers turned sour. Frank' Stretton took the win for the Swords with inter- mittent help from Don 'LQbber' Laurie, The final game of the series is being played Wednesday night at 7:00 and promises to ' be a real heart stopper. STAR PLAYERS BARONS: Don 'Golden Glove' Workman kept up his heroics in the field along with a good gaine at bat. M.A.S.H.: Dale 4Spearchucker' Pletch was a bright spotior his team with his promising pitching and capable batting. SABRES: George 'Kaline' Val- iance was the big gun for his gang going 4 for 6 including 2 homers and a triple: STINKERS: Dave 'Jingles' Has- tings was a tiger at the plate going 4 for 5 and scoring 4 runs. myself. After watching guys like you all these years I should have learned something." "If you're ever around Niles- town some Friday night next summer and you feel likethrash- ing the old 1/4 mile for a night,, you can use my' car. It won't be really fast but you can still i have use of it anytime you want. ! "I hope everything is going 4okay up in Brussels.' read quite a while ago that you were elected Reeve. I'm sure you'll do well . in that position. I usually drive through Brussels when I'm up that way. It's a beautiful town. "Well, I'm sorry for taking up so much of your time. Your ' skill certainly hasn't lessened at all and it .was really good to watch you drive again. Hope you can drop out to Nilestown next summer. Now ,if I can just find a signpainter who, knows how to do a good woody wood- pecker...."
