Within two days, of the an-
nouncement, wholesale meat
prices across Canada had already
dropped $2.00 - $5.00 a hundred-
weight. And four major meat
packers are forecasting lower
meat prices for consumers.
JOBLESS DOWN
Canada's unemployment
figures steadily decline. Statis-
tics Canada reported that the
unemployment rate for July is
down to 5.2% from 5.3% in June,
The total of unemployed Cana-
dians, according to a Gallup Poll
taken the first week of July.
Partisan approval of the with-
drawal was - Liberals, 83%, C on-
servatives, 92% and NDP, 84%.
HOUSING STARTS UP
Housing starts in Canada
during the second quarter of this
year reached 78,533 - double
the starts recorded for the first
quarter, 38,798 and almost 7,000
more than the number of starts
in the second quarter 'of 1972,

The Federal Government has
undertaken to deal with rising
food prices 'and to lessen their
effects on people with fixed in-
conies.
P.rime Minister .Trudeau
announced a three-point pro-
gram, assuringCanadians "there
is no shortage of food in Canada,
nor will any be allowed' to
develop":.
- temporary controls on beef
and pork exports
.- old age pensions and in-
come supplement payments will
increase quarterly rather than
annually - a pensioner now re-.
Surprised on
anniversary
A surprise party was held on
Sunday August 12 at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Thornton
for Mr. and. Mrs. George Thorn-
ton, Brussels on the occasion
of their anniversary.
Mr. and Mrs. Thornton have
two children, Robert of Dublin;
and (Margaret) Mrs. Art Weiler,
Toronto; also five grandchildren.
Many lovely gifts were opened
and thanks given followed by a
smorgasbord supper. present
