Public
(Continued from page 1)
to attend a future meeting to ex-
plain what funding can be
expected.
The Chairman of Monday's
meeting, Wayne Lowe and many
of those in attendance felt that
it the trend towards regional
government in Ontario continues,
those communities which do not
have, up-to-date 'arena facilities
could in the future lose all chance
of obtaining grants for new arenas
and that any improvements would
go to larger centres.
It was emphasized that nothing
could be done in time for the
1973-4 skating season but that the
committee would hold regular
meetings and begin a fund rais-
ing campaign as soon as a deci-
sion on building a new arena or
enlarging the old one is made,
and' the amount of grants available
is ascertained.
It is hoped that a permanent
chairman and arena committee
can be selected at the August
27 meeting.
"we need a younger man,"
said Herb Stretton, who agreed to
take the position only temporarily
for health reasons.
"If it is decided to build
a. new arena, the old structure
could probably be removed and
sold, perhaps to a farmer, and
the arena property divided
and sold as building lots," Mr.
Stretton said. Another suggestion
was made • that the Brussels Curl-
ing Club could take over the old
arena.
The idea of a new recrea-
tion complex, including a
swimming pool has been pretty
well abandoned as the cost of
maintaining as well as building
a public pool would be prohibitiVe.
*,If someone gave us a pool we
couldn't afford the $5,000 a week
it would cost to maintain it,"
Mr. McCutcheon ' commented.
Representatives from Morris
and Grey Townships will be in-
vited to attend the August' 27
meeting and to take part in the
decision on building a new arena
or renovating the old.
