bottles were smashed, strewn on
the library lawn and boulevard.
Stones were throwh at hydro
installations, etc. The library
lawn and steps are a' favourite
gathering place for some people,
both during the day, and the night.
No doubt most are well behaVed
but there are always the few who
are not. It is a pity that all
those who congregate there can-
not behave themselves and re-
frain from such immature, stupid
behaviour. * * * * *
The Lions Park is a favourite
spot during the hot summer days
we have been blessed with. Yes,
we know there are people ,who
don't feel blessed by the hot
weather. However there are those
of us who prefer seeking .a cool
shady spot in preference to turn-
ing up the thermostat and huddling
bundled up in sweaters to keep
warm. A number of gatherings,
couples and individuals have been
observed at the Lions Park, mak-
ing use of the fine picnic facilit-
ies provided by out local Lions
Club. The mouth-watering frag-
rance of barbecuing steaks there
is frequently . wafted on the
evening breeze.

Have you been offered a
c ,miracle" agricultural product
this year? Usually, the sales-
man is a persuasive talker who
makes exaggerated claims for his
product. He preys on either
the economy-minded farmer
looking for a simple, inexpensive
way to increase crop yields and
crop quality, or the organic"
materials. "
The fertility quack IS easy to
Spa, says 11.C. Lang, soils and
crops specialist. Here are afew
tips:
He claims his product promotes
healthier soil bacteria and the
growth of earthworms which
condition the soil and unleash
the nutrients already in it.
He will not guarantee the nitro-
gen, phosphorus or potassium
content of his product, thus
side-stepping the Canada De-
partment of Agriculture Ferti-
lizer Act.
He offers no unbiased
research results to back up his
claims. Instead he points to
testimonials, • usually from
farmers "in the United States.
There is no way of knowing if
tthese observations are valid or
apply to local Ontario soil condi-
tions. When asked what the local
extension specialist thinks of
the product, the quack will reply:
"Don't ask him: He probably
wouldn't know the value of our
product and so wouldn't re-
commend it."
He may criticize research
scientists at agricultural uni-
versities and colleges, saying;
"They won't test our product.".'
The product the quack is pro-
moting may not be licensed for
sale in Canada. Do not believe
him if he says you can import
it -for use on your farm. And
do not buy the product from him
because you may be breaking the
law:
Ontario farmers have
increased their yields of corn,
soybeans, wheat, barley, and hay
by following fertilizer practices
based on reliable research
agricultural technology. For
Department of the Ontario Agri-
cultural College, and collegesof
results from the Soils and.Crops • reliable information or advice on
fertilizer practices, contact your
county extension office or ferti-
lizer dealer.
