Demonstration
isgood
practice
Am I using too much ferti-
lizer? Would a different chemical
give better weed control? It's
important that farmers have the
information to answer such ques-
tions about production practices
on their farms. Carrying out
field demonstrations helps in
understanding a crop's response
to tillage, fertilization, and
chemical weed control practices,
says C.S. Baldwin, a soil scien-
tist at the Ridgetown College
of Agricultural Technology.
These demonstration plots
can be beneficial in many ways.
If seed 'quality is questionable,
leaving untreated test plots is a
good way to check on seed quality.
By comparing the development of
plants in the untreated test plot
with treated plants, it is possible
to determine the effects of chemi-.
cals used. Some pesticide per-
formance guarantees now require
a check strip so that comparisons
can be made.
Because many farmers in On-
tario have been using large
amounts of phosphorous and po-
tassium fertilizers, soil test
levels have risen. When soil
test levels are high, the amount
of fertilizer required can be re-
duced with no loss in yields.
Demonstration plots, with vary-
ing rates of fertilizer' applied,
permit comparisons of the res-
ponse of plants in specific areas.
Dr. Baldwin stresses the im-
portance of careful marking
of demonstration plots. The
plots should be clearly marked
out at the time , of application.
Sturdy stakes, preferably white
or a bright colur, should be lo-
cated in the growing crop. Make-
shift markers, such as stones,
sticks, and fertilizer bags, that
line up "somewhere" near the
boundary of the test area are
inadequate. Notes on the type
of fertilizer, or pesticide, rate
of application, and tillage
practice whould be. kept.

' OIL AND GAS--CANADA FIRST
Energy Minister Donald Mac-
Donald said in the House of Corn-
ons that the government is
studying the possibility of a two-
price system for oil and gas to
protect Canadians against the
effect of a United States petro-
leum shortage.
A Toronto Star editorial lauds
the minister's suggestion stating
that "Canada's abundance of oil...
should be turned to the advantage
of c'anadia.ns, both in conser-
vation of the resource for our
future needs and in reasonable
prices to Canadian consumers."
RECORD AGRICULTURAL EX-
PORTS
Canadian farmers exported a
record $2,135 billion in agricul-
tural products in 1972 - exceed-
ing the two billion dollar mark
for the first time.
Expanded sales of wheat, bar-'
ley,. pork, cattle hides and furs,
were largely responsible for the
$151 million increase over the
previous export record set 'in
1971.
PRICE AND WAGE FREEZE OP-
POSED
Premier William Davis of On-
tario doesn't think Canada's
economic situation is serious
enough to warrent wage and price
controls. He told the Ontario
Legislature "my own view is
that we have not reached that
point."
PRIME MINISTER MEETS WITH

miers in Ottawa, Prime Minister
Trudeau urged increased co-
ordination of federal and provin-
cial government programs. Mr.

federal government and strong
provincial governments."
The Prime Minister and the
premiers are meeting for three
days to discuss primarily the
financing of three cost-sharing
programs - medicare, hospital
insurance and post-secondary

WESTERN CONFERENCE .
Prime Minister Trudeau and
the premiers of the four western
provinces will hold their Confer-
ence on Western. Economic
Opportunities in Calgary, July 24,
25 and 26.
The Conference, the first of
its kind in the history of Cana-
dian federalism, will consider
ways to broaden the economic
and industrial base of Western
Canada. Earlier this month,
Mr. Trudeau said the on-
ference is another step that we
are taking..., in order to try to
resolve the kind of alienation
which exists in the western part
of this country."

There are few , times as
joyous as Easter. For in Easter
we see a purpose and a mean-
ing in our lives. our faith is
renewed when we realize the
importance and impact of Easter.
God has come through with
His promise to man. Christ
died for us, and yet we must
be joyous-for he was raisedfrom
the dead and has promised
to be a comfort to all men,
through all ages, until the end
of the world. He is very much
alive today and willing to help
us, if we would only receive him.
It may be easy to dial long
distance today and reach a party
thousands of miles away with no
trouble at all. It's even easier
to reach Christ, you don't even
need a telephone. All you need
is a need and desire in your
heart to do what God wants you
to do with your 'life. For in
Easter, we are reassured that
Jesus Christ lives-and the proof
is in our faith.
