screening programs probably are
as much a health education} acti-
vity as a case-finding one.
A survey of home care
services, as affecting 1/, D,
patients is being carried out
across the province, Mr. Mc
Donald reported.
Mr. McDonald said control is
through enaoilitation, both
social and medical and there has
been great development in this
area in the past two years by
physicaL conditioning courses for
asthmatic children, Classes in
this area are carried out by
Mrs.- IanClarke and Mrs. Graham
13owker, both physiotherapists.
Breathing conditioning cour-
ses are held for adult patients
too, also 'Better Breathing and
Respiratory Disease' and 'Em-
physema Clubs' - social and edu-
cational; and smoking withdrawal
courses, newest and fastest
growing program activity in the
province, Mr. McDonald said.
On the cigarette subject, Mr.
McDonald said that contrary to
commonly held opinion, a
minority, only two out of five
Canadian adults, are habitual ci-
garette smokers. He said from a
peak of 58 per cent in 1965,
the proportion of regular
cigarette smokers among men 20
and over dropped to 51 per cent
in 1970. He said the• propor-
tion of regular smokers among
teenage girls has increased sub-
stantially, 19 per cent in 1965
to 25 per cent in 1970, up one-
third. He said female smoking
is up 200 per cent.
"Cigarette smoking cessation
is our Number One program
priority." Mr. McDonald stated.
"We must be prepared as mem-
bers of our. Association and as
people concerned with the health
problem. There is only one
position - there can be no com-
promise. We can overcome this
health hazard by all playing a
part at this time by upholding
the rights of non-smokers and by .
assisting in increasing the popu-
lation of non-smokers so that
smoking will be socially unaccep-
table."
Several children from the
Asthmatic Conditioning Program
demonstrated some of the exer-
cises learned at classes with
Mrs, Graham Bowker of Clinton,
Physiotherapist, explaining the
need for exercises in breathing
properly. She said the problem
with breathing with these children
is not that they can't breathe in
properly, but they have diffiCulty
in breathing out.

After a successful season the
Gigglers took the championship.
The standings were as follows;
Gigglers - 13 points; Desert
Punkins - 12; Ding Bats - 7;
Tornadoes - 6; Ocean Frogs -2.
The Ocean Frogs stood watch-
ing the other four teams battle
it out for the championship. In
the series between the Gigglers
and Ding Bats the Gigglers were
victorious, as they won by scores
of 5-4, 4-4 arid 7-4. The series
between the Desert Punkins and
the Tornadoes was a real battle,
but the Desert Punkins 'broke
through with their great scoring
ability. The scores were 6-4
and 9-7 in the Punkins favour.
Now the real battle began
between the two top teams. The
Gigglers and the Desert Punkins
played very tight hockey through-
out the playoffs and this series
was no exception. The Gigglers
held down the usually high scores
of the Punkins as the first game
