TODAYS CHILD
You might guess from Jerry's expression that he is a
lively boy and indeed he is.
Jerry is alert, active and constantly on the go. Just now
he is on mild medication to quiet him down a little. This lad
has too much energy to sit down with a book but he will watch
a few favorite television programs. •
Jerry is in Grade Two and is felt to have average ability.
He is not working up to his potential, however - perhaps because
he is so active.
Tall and slightly built, eight-year-old Jerry has blue eyes,
blonde hair and fair skin. Information on his background is
limited but he is probably Anglo-Saxon.
Jerry's foster home is in the country where he loves the
carefree life and the open spaces. He is good friends with dogs
and cats and is fond of hunting for frogs and snakes or whatever-
other small creatures he can find.
Since Jerry is accustomed to children of all ages, he can fit
into a family wherehe will have brothers and sisters. However,
the Children's Aid Society hopes there will_ not be many other
children in his adoption home so Jerry will get an abundance of
attention.
To inquire about adopting Jerry, please write to Today's
Child, Box 888, Station K, Toronto M4P 2H2.

The Ontario Government
came under fierce attack in the
Legislature this week from both
Opposition parties over the
Province's increased sales tax,
and was challenged •by Liberal
Leader Robert Nixon to take
the issue to the people in a
general election.
Mr. Nixon described Mr.
White as smiling gravedigger
who is sealin g the fate of his
party with this tax".
N,D.P. Leader Stephen Lewis
said the tax increases were cruel
and hit poor and lower income
people particularly hard.
All Opposition Members
spoke on second reading of the
Bill to increase the sales tax
from 5% to 7%. It turned into
the strongest attack yet on the
Davis Government by the ..Oppo-
sition.
The main thrust of the
Opposition argument was that ,
the sales ,tax was a regressive
tax and this increase would be
Inflationary.
John MacBeth (P. C.
York West) was named Chair-
man of a Committee appointed
to investigate the building of
Ontario Hydro's new head of-
fice.
The 11 member Select Com-
mittee of the Legislature has
been named to look into the
circumstances surrounding the
granting of a contract to Canada
Square Corporation Ltd. , to
build new offices for Ontario
Hydro at the corner of Uni-
versity Avenue and College
Street.
The Committee, according to
the Chairman, is prepared to look
into charges of political patron-
age.. It has been alleged that
Canada Square got the Hydro
contract .because of Canada
Square President Moog's per-
sonal friendship with the
Premier, and because he don-
ated to the Progressive Con-
servative Party.
The Globe and Mail in a
front page story last week has
said that Ontario Hydro paid a
firm of architects $1,485,000 for
plans of a new office and then
decided not to build the offices
itself.
I am on the Committee along
with James Hullbrook from
Sarnia for the Liberal Party.
There have been a number
of grants made this week under
the Conservation Authorities. Act.
They are as follows.
(1) A $325 • grant for initial
capital development in the Hehn
Wildlife Area to the Saugeen
Valley Conservation Authority.
(2) A $1,500 grant for initial
development programme in the
Brussels Conservation Area to
the maitla.nd Valley Conservation
Authority.
(3) A $1,025 grant to the
Saugeen Authority for capital im-
provement in the Brucedale Con-
servation area in Bruce Town-
ship.
(4) A $3,250 grant to the
Saugeen Authority for capital im-
provements in the Russell Con-
servation area located in Kin-
cardine Township.
The hazards of cigarette
smoking are well-documentedi,
but how about the hazards of other.
kinds of smoking? •
• The latest government survey
concluded that about 30 percent
of university students in this
country are marijuana smokers.
Other surveys have found higher
percentages and also indicated
increasing rates among high
school students and even preteen-
agers.
Because marijuani is ellegal o
research has been severely re-
stricted. Few studies have ex-
plored the effects on the lungs
at the New York 'University
Medical Center, these findings
may have important implications
for the long-term effects of mari-
juana smoking. In his own pilot
studies with people smoking pot,
Dr. Haas found that some sub-
jects developed similar symp-
toms as hashish smokers: sore
throats, hoarseness, and trouble
in the upper respiratory area.
He also foulnd marked differences
between the effects of smoking
cigarettes and marijuana. Ciga-
rette smoking narrows the air
passages in the lungs, while pot
smoking appears to expand those
passages.
It will take years to amass
the facts about smoking mari-
juana.

and body. But some experiments
have suggested a direct corre-
lation between smoking hashish,
which is a strobger substance
than marijuana, and chronid
bronchitis.
A recent study of 31American
soldiers found that most of the
men-developed symptoms of lung
trouble after smoking hashish re-
gularly for three to four months.
Nine men developed severe
shortness of breath and coughed
up mucus, which indicated dis-
tress in the ower respiratory
tract.
