Farmers , putting money
behind land protests
This week in the Legislature
Provincial Transport Minister
Gordon. Cart-On indicated that
trucks will not be' able to use the
left lane wherever a freeway has
three or more lanes in one dir-
ection.
Trucks will be prohibited
from using certain lanes on four
major Ontario highways under a
Provincial Government regulat-
ion aimed at speeding traffic flow
and reducing rear end collisions.
Mr. Carton noted the diffi-
culty arising from trucks moving
at 60 miles an hour blocking the
70 m.p.h. traffic, particularly
while trying to pass one another
on hills, This can cause a stop
and go situation for 'some dis-
tance with the PC;tential for num-
erous rear end collisions, accor-
ding to Mr. Carton.

John white, Provincial Trea-
surer assured the Association of
Counties and Regions of Ontario
this week that the Government is
presently studying very carefully
the needs of each region of the
Province, with respect to reg-
ional government, and what kind
of local Government reform
would do the best job of meet-
ing the needs of the community.
Mr. White also indicated that
any proposals for amalgamat-
ions would be dealt with very
sympathetically. He said that
some consolidations of two or
more areas would in some cases , .
constitute a more effective
form that 'could be dchieved
establishing a regional gove
ment.

Farmers in northern Huron
and southern Bruce counties who
have been protesting prices being
offered for land on the route of
.- a proposed Ontario Hydro power
transmission line are putting
money up in support of their
claims.
.DaVe McCallum, R.R, 1, Wing-
ham told directors of the Huron
County Federation of Agriculture
Thursday night in 'Clinton that
1.• some 130 properties along the
route of line from Douglas point
to Seaforth have not yet been sold,
It had been decided, he said,
to go ahead and try to get money
to commission a consulting firm
to determine the value of the
land in question. Each farmer has
been asked to give $75 to $100
and, Mr. M(Xallutri says, tiIt's
unbelievable the support we're
getting from the farmers invol-
ved".
So far it seems about 90
per cent of the farmers will
agree to give the money, he
said to help raise the $10,000
needed to conduct the study. He
said the farmers need profes-
sional help if they are to have
the inforination to fight Hydro.
Farmers involved have been
complaining since the issue arose
first that prices offered for the
land required for the line have
not been realistic and tactics used
by Hydro negotiaters are less
than honest. They have formed
a committee to negotiate as a
group and have been given help
from a special cOninclittee from
the Ontario V.Aieration of Agri-
culture.
Mr. McCallum Said other
groups seem to be doming out
in support Of the farmers inVol,,
Ved. The Huron County Soil
and Crop IrnproVeinetit ASSO,
diation, he said, had kicked in
to help meet the costs of
the fight.
He said there seems' to be
little knowledge of jUst hOW much
land is really involved. Near
Seaferth i he said, Hydro is leas-
ing a 2 x 12b-foot strip of land,
but is 80'v-eying a 'kb fOOt Strip.
