Mites beat parents
in season final
In the final game of the season,
the Brussels Mites scored a 5 - 4
victory over their parents. The
game was arranged as a fun-filled
climax to the season and it was
exactly that. Adults who had not
been on skates for several years
put on the blades to compete
against their son in an attempt
to show him how the game should
be played. We can only hope
that the boys will forget a few of
the pointers that the parents
were displaying particularly
in the goal keeping department.
According to the Parents' goal-
tender, Phyllis Mitchell, this is
how to play goal. Stand with
your feet about two feet apart,
make sure that your foot touches
the right post. Then ,place the
goal stick in your left hand and
let the blade of the stick rest
against the left goal post. place
your right arm over the crossbar
to make sure you maintain this
position. Then, when you see the
puck coming toward you, shriek
loudly and fall flat on your
stomach. This strategy works
particularly well when the puck
is shot wide of the net.
The Mites opened the scoring
with only seventeen seconds gone
in the first period when Bradley
Wright took a pass in front of
the goal from John Huether. The
parents tied the score at the three
minute mark when Don Achilles
took a pass from Laverne God-
kin in their own end and skated
the length of the ice. Many people
thought the play was off-side
but it wasn't called by the referee
so the goal stood. With five
minutes left in the period the
Parents scored again when Kathy
Achilles took a. swing at a Mite
player, missed and accidently
hit the puck which bounced off
Marion Godkin's skate and was
shot into the net by Marg Bennett
who had slammed her stick to the
ice in her attempt to keep from
falling.
At the six minute mark of the
second period, Kevin Deitner tied
the score when he took a lead
pass from Bradley Wright and
skated in alone on Phyllis
Mitchell. At the ten minute
mark, .Stewart Cardiff gave the •
Mites a lead on a long shot from
the point. Phyllis Mitchell
claimed she was screened on
the play but it turned out she was
just pointed the wrong way. Two
minutes later John Huether stole
the puck in the parents end and
made the score 4 -2 for the
Mites. The parents scored two
More lucky goals, one by Don.
Achilles and the other by Mel
McArter, before Peter Bennett
notched the winner on a beauti-
ful passing play with Todd
Wheeler.
Playing for the parents were;

"Dealer" wheeler; Gert "Go-
Gettum" -Kellington; Don "Off-
side" Achilles; Kathy "Slash"
