Tony Kyle, 15, of Hensall„
won the pilgrimage for Youth
trip to the United Nations at
New York, when he topped four
girls in a pubiie speaking contest
in Clinton Friday night.
Tony, a grade 10 student, at
South Huron Secondary School in
Exeter won the all-expense paid
fifteen-day trip to New York this
summer sponsored by the TOOF
and Rebekah Lodges.
One of 150 Grades 10 and 11
students across Canada and the
U.S. taking part in the 24th an-
nual pilgrimage, Tony will spend
six days in New York observing
the United Nations in action,
visit the Empire State Building,
Rockefeller Centre, museums,
churches, shopping and attending
Broadway plays.
Odd Fellow and. Rebekah
Lodges located along the route
extend hospitality to the young
people with meals, lodging, sight-
seeing and other entertainment.
Tony spoke on "Apathy" and
gave an impromptu speech on
"Flowers".
Runner-up in the contest,
sponsored by the Huron County
lodges, was Mary Edith Garniss,
16, of R.R. 4, Wingham, who spoke
on "Family Doctor".
Other competitors were:
Kathy Cook of Hensall who spoke
On "Canadian Identity"; Toni
Pennings of H.R. 1, Zurich, who
spoke on ."Indians of Canada";'
and Flora Nabrotzky of Tees-
water who sppke on "Smiles".
Awards and certificates were
presented by Harry Gerrie of
Wingham, District Deputy Grand
master of 100F, Huron District
No. 8.
Mrs. Keith Sharp of Seaforth,
District Deputy president of
Huron District No.- 23, Rebekah.
Assembly of Ontario was
chairman for the event.

Brussels Council i.: going to
clear up the problem of dogs
running at large.
Meeting Monday evening,
members agreed that if dog taxes
were not paid the amounts„in-
volved would be added to the
owner's property taxes. Dogs
which are picked up while running
at large will be destroyed if not
claimed within three days.
With the approach of spring,
council gave consideration, to
street clean up. Streets will be
swept as weather permits. At
the same time the CNR is being
asked to improve the street
on their Brussels property.

located in designated areas. Con-
sideration will be given to future
requirements for additional
building lots and the necessary
streets to serve them.
Couneil approved three build-
ing permits for work totalling
$3,200. These included David
R. Hastings, garage $200; George
Jutzi bay to truck shed $1,000
and J. M. McDonald Lumber
Ltd. Lumber shed 12 x 100 feet
$2,000. A grant of $200 to the
Horticultural Society was ap-
proved.

Brussels stores will open
Friday evenings commencing
April 13, the Brussels Business
Association decided at a meeting
last Wednesday in the Library.
A feature of the opening night
will be specials which each place
of business is being asked to
make available.
Society sees
slides of trip
The Brussels Horticultural
Society met in the Brussels Pub-
lic Library with 23 members and
two guests present. Mrs. wm.
Hewitt presided and weldomed the
members.
Mr. A. Knight read the news-
letters and added that members
had sent 6 slides to the District
Convention. The Convention is
to be held April 28 at Blyth.
Voting delegates are Mrs. Wm.
Hewitt and F. Dunk. There
will be a car from Ethel, one
from Walton, and hopefully 2
from Brussels.
The May meeting date was
discussed and it was decided to
hold it the evening of May 21st.
Mrs. WM. Campbell thanked
the F ,utive and members for
of office as president. Mrs.
Cudrnore expressed the ap-
preciation of the members and

presented a gift.
Mr. Knight showed his slides
of a trip to California and Mrs.

The meeting ' named a com-
mittee to consider ways of pro-
moting the business section of
the village which will be the
basis of discussion at the next
meeting. On the committee are
Mrs. "Roy Kennedy, 133 y Adams
and George Langlois. In pro-
posing a promotion program con-
sideration is to be given to the
varying extent which different
types of businesses may benefit.
The association will sponsor a
fireworks display on May 18 at
the Fair Grounds. Brussels
firemen will be asked to super-
vise the display. in the event of
rain the display will be held
May 21.
To pay tribute on the occas-
ion of the death of a businessman
MISS Carol Wheeler and Miss
Joan Huether tried tests at Wal-
kerton Figure Skating School and
both passed the Willow WaltZ
and Ten Fox dances to corn-
plete their Junior Bronze dance
set.
Miss Wheeler also succeeded
in., passing the Fourteen Step,
the first in the .series of Senior
Bronze dances and also passed
her 1st Mitre Test.
On Sunday April 1st, seven-
teen Brussels girls tried skat-
ing tests at the Listowel Arena
and, succeeded in passing the fol-
lowing: Fourteen Step, joa.ti
or retired businessman, each
business will display a card on
it's door on the day of the funeral.
Members agreed that the next
meeting would follow a dinner in
the American Hotel on April 25
at 7 p.m. Fees for the current
year were set at $10 and are now
due.

Skating Club.
