Base housing decision on
OHC survey and report
ESTABLISHED

BRUSSELS
ONTARIO
OS
Brussels council in making
formal application for Senior
Citizen housing based its decision
on a report on the need and
demand for rent geared to in-
come accommodation for Senior
Citizens in Brussels which had
been prepared by the Ontario
Housing Corporation.
This is the report:
In September of 1972 the
Council of the Village of Brussels
passed a resolution requesting
the Ontario Housing Corporation
to conduct a survey of need and
demand for rent-geared-to-
income accommodation for
senior citizens in the Village.
Some time later the Townships
of Morris and Grey which are
adjacent to the Village requested '
that they be included in the survey
of units located in Brussels.
. These would be the first Ontario
Housing unitsin any of the munici-
palities.
In October, 1972, two hundred
questionnaires and explanatory
pamphlets were sent to Brussels
for distribution to persons over
the age of 60.: At the same time
two hundred questionnaires were
sent to Morris Township, and two
hundred and fifty to Grey.-These
were mailed to senior citizens
during November and December,
1972.
On January 1'7; 1973, a re-
search analyst from OHC visited
Brussels and analysed the ques-
tionnaires received up to that
date' Of the total of 63 respon-
dents, 23 were considered very
.interested and needy and 17
thought they might be interested
at some future date. Twenty were
not interested in Ontario Housing,
an d 3 were ineligible. There is,
therefore, an effective demand
for 23 senior citizen units in
Brussels.
Based on the information
given in this report it is recom-
mended that consideration be
given to the development of 23
one-bedroom units for senior
citizens .in the Village of Brus-
sels. This would be the first
Ontario Housing development in
the Village.
The Village of Brussels is
at the junction of Huron County
roads #12 and #16, • approxim-
ately 10 miles south of Wingham.
The Village is approximately 20
miles northwest of Listowel via
Highway #86 and. County Road
#12.
The 1971 assessed population
of Brussels was 911, an increase
of 69, or 1.6 per cent per annum,
over the 1966 figure of 842. In
1971, .260 persons, or 28.5 per
cent of the population, were 60
years of age or over. In addition,
323 persons in Grey Township and
248 persons in Morris Township
were senior citizens. The total
population to be served by Ontario
Housing units in Brussels was
4,418 in 1971, of which 18.8 per
cent were senior citizens.
Almost all the housing stock
in the Village consists of owner-
occupied single-detached houses,
many of which predate the turn
of the Century an d are still in
very good condition. The only
'rental accommodation avail-
able is in a few converted houses
or over stores. Demand is
apparently strong to purchase
houses, but few come on the
market.
Brussels is mainly the com-
mercial centre for the stirround--
ing farming areas and employ-
ment opportunities are limited in
