The Collegiate Institute and the By-law
Some Facts and An Appeal
The facts are thc following
1. -The building has been practically condemne by the Education prpartepeet.
2 -The Board aas not rushed unthinkingly into t*present scheme of permanent improv
ifor years the Department has been urging the -matter upon the attention of the Board for action. .
3. -The Board has been long convinced that some such plan was a necessity, but -held back in
Interest of the taxpayers until the Town would be in a more favourable position for action.
4. -For two years the Government grant was withdravin, and only paid when the Board took
action to meet the requirements of the situation. This vet amounts to about $1,500 a year.
5,_This grant will certainly be witt:held if. by the defeat of the By-law, the Board is unable to
tweed with the work, and this amount will have to lx: raised by taxes.
6. ---The defeat of the By-law will leave us with the poorest building and equipment of any High
fitit001 or Collegiate -Institute in the County.
7. -The town is meeting its indebtedness, by paying off maturing debentures, faster, probably,
,than the citizens arc fully aware of. There are maturing the last payments On debentnres as follows.:

IL -At a meeting of the Board. held on Tuesday. April 8th, a tender for the work was unani-

12. ---The vote on the By-law taken place on Monday, the 14th instant.
The Board has decided that they vrill not make any regular canvass of the voters. It is your
By-law, not rnirs, and we must be governed by your decision. However, having placed the facts before
you, we confidently, and in good faith, appeal to you to rally in support of the By-law and give the Board
the opportuttity to place the Collegiate in a position of which the Town may well be proud.
