Peggy had worked very hard all day
t making a snow man. When she was all
finished she called gaily to mother to look
out of the window.
"Ile is indeed a lovely snow man. my
dear." said the mother,"but why put that
ugly old pipe in his mouth ?"
"Oh, all snowmen must have pipes,
mother."
"But, my dear, if he should suddenly
take a notion to smoke he would melt
away."
The next morning Mr. Snowman was as
as new, "You see, mother." said
rggy. "My snowman doesn't smoke."
But that afternoon when she came
home from town with mother Mr. Snow-
man had all disappeared but his pipe and
his hat.
"Oh. mother," cried Peggy, much dis-
tressed. 'll'ou were right. He's like

DJ your duty. little man,
That's the way !
There's some duty in the plan
Of every day.
Every day has' some new task
For your hand:
Do it bavely-that's the way
Life grows grand.
"Do your duty." sing the stars,
That so bright
Through the midnight's dusky bars
Shed their light.
"Do your duty," says the sun
High in heaven ;
To the dutiful. when tasks are done,
Crowns are given.
Crowns of power and crowns of fame;
Crowns of life :
In glory burns the victor's name.
After strife.

A Soliloquy of a Bottle of Ink.
I am a bottle of very black ink. Parents
think I am very dangerous in the hands of
a child, but i am not.
It not my fault if parents talk to the
children about me until they are all afraid
of me. They are so frightened when they
pick me up that they drop me or they
watch me so carefully for fear I will spill
that they do not look where they are
going. Then they run into a chair or stub
their toe on a rug and away 1 ga ! Over
rugs and furniture !-
I lifter I make a shocking mess of
everythibut what else can i do but
spill when j am turned upside down ?
Uo you t Mk it is:pleasant for me thus
to end my life spread over rues and
furniture That feel themselves disgraced
by my pre-ence? No, indeed, i do not
enjoy It.
My idea of 1 su-ci?stful life would be to
have some wonderful 'person use me fur
writing proems.
When little boys and gi pick me up 1
often wish i could say to th "Now, do
not be afrai 1 of me, for 1 do t want to
spill on your dress or on mamma's
rug any more than you want me to. Just
do not think about dropping me and 1 am
sure that we will be good friends." ''.
Bees don't care about the snow;
I can tell you why that's so ;

Who was much too warm for me.

A Game -Puss in the ('(rete.
A large circle is marked on the ground
or floor. One player, who is Puss, stands
in the centre of this circle : the other
players stand outside of the circle sur-
rounding it. Th, se players may be tagged
by Puss whenever they leave a foot inside
of the circle. They will run the risk of
getting caught by stepping in and out .of
the circle, teasing Puss in every possible
way to tag them.
Anyone whom Puss touches becomes a
prisoner and is another Puss, joining the
first I'uss in the circle to help tag the
others. I he last one tagged is the winner
of the game'.

seems to be in doubt, though five written
reasons for judgment were handed down

appeal was ,dismissed. Justice Lennox
dissenting.
At the trial Justice Kelly had said that
r
if the contract was not contrary to public I
policy Harris should get $17.000 morel
than he had received.
Three to Two.
In the Appellate Court, three of the
judges, Justices Middleton. Riddell and
Lennox. say tfiere has been no infringe-
ment o1 public pc,hcy. Two. Cbiel Justice
Meredith and Justice Latchford, agree
with Justice Kelly that public policy was
infringed.
Two of the judges, Justices Lennox and
Middleton, state that Harris should receive
$17,000 more than he has. Chief Justice
Meredith and Justice Riddell say that he
earned no cJm;t.issions.
"That which the plaintiff desired,
sought and contracted to sell, and wnicti
alone was of any use to the defendants,
and so the only substantial consideration
for their contract to buy, was the influ•
enee of one of the highest Ministers of
the Crown in the British Government .

other ersons rn heal official standing in
Great Britain; an influence to be procured,
in the one instance, through the ties o1
family connection. and in the other Mose
of personal acquantanceships."
"Tell that to the marines," the Chief '
Justice says he is tempted to say in an -I
swer to a suggestion that a company
capable of manutactunng ammunition in
enormous quality needed such influence
to get an attentive and anxious heannx
at a time when British armies were in
dangergof disastrous defeat for want of
shells. Especially, he remarks, a company.

capable and persistent president they had

,justice Ridden says the plaintiff was
but a fly on the wheel in the securing of
cataracts.
Justice Lennox would riverse the Dial
judgment, and dir,ct judgment to be
entered fur the plaintiff for $17,83980
with interest from September 5, 1917.
Nothing Improper.
Justice Middleton finds nothing
improper in the transaction. He says :
"No one in authority was to be improp-
erly influenced. no public servant was to
be called upon to depart from his pri nary
obligation to the public. I am glad to
reach this conclusion, as it is not a peas-
ant this g to listen to an able counsel
denouncing the infamy of conduct to
which his client is a party as a means of
