The Ottawa Government has thrown
a bomb into the Ontario temperance
workers' camp by announcing that the
referendum vote, originally arranged for
October 25, will not be taken until April
of next year. The reason given is that
the voters' lists must be revised before
the vote is taken. There has been a
split among the temperance workers 01
the Provinee in connection with the
referendum. but the two factions unite in
condemning the Government's action in
postponing the vote. So far as the
probable result of the voting is concerned,

Those German Fieldguns.
Wood.t:rk ieview
A returned soldier. who is not a mem-
ber of the local organization of veterans
but w•ha claims some right to speak for
many returned men because of hj ktioWt•
edge of their viewssays that, in the opinion
est several of the men. a good place for the
.German find -guns would be Lake Huron
sir the Atlantic Ocean. His argument,
wh:ch he says is the argument of others,
is that there Is nothing distinctive about
these trophies, as every municipality in
the country will have similar trophies,
that the guns have been dismantled and
it is impossible for even an experienced
artilleryman to explain their working -to
the layman. and that. anyway, the aver-
age soldier is sick and tired of both the
war and the war talk.
it is easy enough to understand the
point of view of this former'soldier. He
went to war because he considered it his
duty to do so, not for love of fighting or
for any attraction the life of a soldier had
for him. He saw so much o( the
horrors of war that he is glad to
get away from them and forget them.
The war if over and he wants to be done
with it. It is a perfectly natural position
-for a returned man to take, and there is
no reason to doubt that many of the men
who rendered splendid service during the
war have similar feelings
There is, of course. another point of
view. For many people these guns have
a high sentimental value. They are
trophies of a great war. They are mute
reminders, of the splendid service rendered
by Canadians in the cause of human free-
dom. From this point of view they are
worthy of preservation in a suitable loca-
tion. But they are not things of beauty
and are not to he used for purposes of
ornament. That is the objection to
placing totem on any of the flower -plots
on the market square. The market
square as it is. with its fountains
and its fiower-plots, presents an
appearance of beauty. it would be im-
partible to bring the gum Into the picteee
without marring it, and that would be a
pity, espeefatly taw there is no need to do
so.
