' Hon. William Sloan, I'rominent In the
Affairs of the ('oast Provinee.
Addressing the convention of the Cana-
dian Fisheries Association, held recently'
in Vancouver, the Hon. William Sloan,
melt of British Columbia, .eclared> that
"Ways and means must devised to
' protect the amen ar.d halibut fisheries of
tete Pacific Ct a,t. or there will be nothing
left to protect.' Waste. he said, o'er -fish•
ing, and lack of proper regulations could
prove disastrous to the fishing industry
unless rented.ed. "The Dominion Gov-
ernment should step in and regulate fish.
eriea in the interest of the people ; failing
that, it should return them to the
Province.'
1 he Hon. William Sloan is another of
the sons of Ontario who have gone West
and "made good." He was born at
Wingham, in1luron county, on September
10, 1887, and is, therefore, almost as old
as Confederation. Many years have
passed since Ontario was his home, and
several of these years were passed in distant
lands. For a time he was in the customs
service at Shanghai, China, and he d d
not return to RrttishColumbia until 18138.
Eight years later he was in the Yukr n.
and was one of those who "'stuck it rich '
when told mining was at its height in the
Klondike country. Again in British
Columbia he hewn to take a prominent
part in public affairs, and in 1904 and
again in 191s the constituency of Como*.
Arlin elected hem to the Home of Com-
mons. Retiring from the Federal field he
entered the Provincial Legislature in 1016,
and a little later was a member of the
Government. Fie has always advocaf.d
the conservation of the fisheries of the
Pacific Coast, and his official position
gives especial weight to his warning. -
