present price, are worth ten cents. These
are flanked by bushels of beans, at ten

the latter as a substitute urged. Potatoes

Why are Goderich audiences so shy and

rt is 6egtiining to dawn upon the
sentatives of Labor that their fight, for
shorter hours and higher wages is not
accomplishing what they desire. Shorter
hours decrease production and higher
wages mean higher prices forcommodities,
and the net result is that Labor itself
pays the increased cost of production.. As
Tom Moore, president of the Dominion
Trades and Labor Congress. said the
other day: "h must be understood that
the raising et wages and lessening of
working bours is npt the whole secret of
raising the standard of living for the
laboring classes. • • • Every few
cents which the employers grant the
workers are immediately eaten up by the
increafed cost of commodities. whose
price is boosted in order to give the
workers the wages." What the working-
man should really be interested in is not
so much bow many dollars he is getting
in his pay envelope as what the contents
of his pay envelope will purchase.
