The meeting of Colborne township ratepayers at the township Hall or. 1 hurt - day last, to hear what Dr. Chisholm, of the Department o1 Education, had to say on the subject of consolidated st.tools, was well attended, those present includ- ing a number -of ladies. The speaker was present on the invitation of the Farmers' Club, whose president, Mr. W. L. Young. explained the object of the meeting and called on Reeve Gordon Young to take the chair. The township clerk, t1r. 1. Hetherington, was asked to act as secre- a. '1 he Reeve briefly addressed the meet - mg, expressing his sympathy with the movement. Dr. Chisholm in his address referred to hundred successful consolidated Manitoba and also tcr-the two in • tario. He explained why such schools were needed. In Colborne township, with ten schools. the average attendance is only fifteen. covering alt the grades. which in many of the schools means ten classes. showing how little time can be given to any one class, while the expenditure and energy go on the same as for forty or fifty pupils in the graded consolidated school. ---HE - men- tiohed the frequent changing Of teachers in the average rural school, whereas - under the new system the position would be more permanent, being better paid and more attractive in a iiriCia1 way. Under the present system the taxation Sys not evenly distributed. while with th , collsu)idated school system the rate would be-reieral to alt; tarts nVerc'oming the high rate on weak sections. Fewer officials wou:d bZ rreCqquired. At present it takes thirty trust a -to manage ten schools. while the new school would re- quire only six. Having to compete` the urban schools with regard to salary and boarding accommodation. the rural schools are at a otsadvantage under the present system, while with the new system the conditions would be changed and a bet- ter class of teachers could be secured. 'the new school Would be sanitary and attrac- tive, while many of the presort schools are neither. Dr. Chisholm said under the present system eighty-five per cent. of the children do not get past the Fourth Book. in the new scnaol one room could be allowed for High School work, wtech would shorten the regular Collegi- ate period by two years.. This would be a great advantage, as it is not wise to send children away from home to school at an age when they most require their parents' care. Many parents, too, feel they cannot afford to send the children away to school who wield be quite willing to give them the time to attend the con- solidated High School claw and live at home. Besides, country tonditiorrs are ideal for study. The speaker alto suR- gested that even if the consolidated school were not possible. a central school should be provided where High School work would be taken 1leoatatefts Five miles is the longest distance a child should he driven. - i'hese consolidated school* were started in Massachus^tts forty six years ago and are still can rying on there. Ontario has only two of these schools yet --one at Guelph. started in 11104, and one in Neer Ontario, the "Hudson."
