THE WINTER FLEET!
Down from the North carne the Winter:Fleet,
Encrusted with ice, but laden with wheat:
From the Western prairies across our inland main,
The belated carriers of golden grain.
The last boats from out the storage port,
Denied by the Frost King the nearer resort,
Battling against storm and contepding against cold,
They steamed down to our harbor's sheltering fold.
Five ships of the Canada Steamship Line.
I will name them here, the last two very large and fine:
The"Midland King," the "Martian," -the gallant "Glenbrae,"
The "E. B. Osler," and the "J. H. Hagerty."
Now the Captain of the last one is a skipper of renown,
And a native son is he, too, of this old Goderich town:
And it gave him great delight, tho' the season was s.) late,
To be piloting his vessel into "Huron's Golden Gate."
For well-nigh Iwo decades he had sailed our inlend seas,
He had parried many a buffet. had sped with many a breeze:
But the thing that tried their mettle now; was ghting with the ices
But they gained the inner harbor, soon were settled &tug and nit e.
Goderich harbor mall known and -the largest vend takes,
She has elevators famous throughout the greater laktes,
The town is one of beauty, and has all things "up to date," '
And in recent time int known as "Huron's Golden Gate."
We will surely all remember the hmous Winter Fleet,
How they sailed down in December with their cargoes of wheat;- -
For they brought two million bushels of the golden grain,
To help feed the hungry millions across the Outer Main.
