Queenston,and encircling the city of
Niagara falls, Ont., which will he
eight and a quarter miles long when
completed.
The original survey for the
Niagara development was made in
1914, and the construction work be-
gun in May, 1917. The con.nus-
don expects to have the new plant
In working order in 1932. War con-'
dttton. handicapped taw engineers.,
but this year's operation, ware begun
on a•gigantle scale. A trip over the
right of way will Impress the oh -

uhdertaking which, in its completed
state. will coat approximately 427,-

Two miles ahoy* the brink of
Niagara Falls a steam dredge Is
gnawing away at the channel of the
Wetland River. removing in generous
.shooks the river bottom and a por-
tion of Hog Island, which guards the
entrance to this historic creek. The
Ione dredge and Its attendant tulp
are the only pieces of equipment en-
gaged on the entire Niggers develop-
ment which ars not owned by the
Hydro -Electric Power Commle*ion.
They, with aux or seven switch
engines, an the only apparatus In
use• on tine development which re-
quire ateim In their operation.
Even the drills employed on the
rock deposits of the canal right of
way, are *pirated by air. electrically
eompretwed. A mile or two Inland a
--huge clamahell swung from an
aerial cableway, drops Into the river
and then emerges, bringing with it
generous bites from the river bot-
tom: which are deposited on the
river hank at the foot of the tower
from where the operator directs the
activities of the clamaLell. Deposits
of earth and 'clay along the north
bank of the river r 1 the inert-
leen/pee of the clamshell In this par-
ticular portion of the development.
A short ride from Niagara Falls
over new roadways built by 'the
erdmmbetion from crushed Ilmestnne
removed from Its right- of way,
brings one to the .canal' proper,
where the •etivitle• of huge electric
shovels, electric trains and tangs of

capacity of 1,000 cubic yards, 1s well

newest safety devices has minimised

Queenaton the Hydro -Electric Power
Commission Is enabled to take ad

agara Belle and the Genre, a total
drop Of 094 [ret, affording 100 per
cent. more electric power from the
same amount of water. The largest
electric units to the world,•55,000
horsepower venerators, will be i.-
etatled In the power house, to pro-
duce electrical energy ter4l*tribatien
throughout the Province of Ontario.
This great Work Is a striking ex-
ample of the bug vision and initiative
of Sir Adam Beck, under whose di-
rection the commtr*Inn carries on Its
