WORLD is staggering with debt. Some of the leading
tries are verging on banksuptcy.
Five years ago Canada had never dreamed of the financial burden she
carries to -day.
Canada entered the Great War with a National Debt of $337,000.000,
or $42 per head of population. Canada emerges with a National Debt
to date of $1,670,263,691, which is expected to approximate $2,000,000,-
000 by the end of the fiscal year—or about $250 for every man. woman
and child in the country. interest charges alone will tat up nearly one-
half our present national revenue. and soldiers' pensions will have to be
provided ,.s well.
Can Ontario Afford to Spend
$36,000,000 a Year on Booze?
PREVIOUS to the Ontario Temperance Act the drink bill of the
Province approximated $36,000.000 per year. an amount about
equal to Ontario's share of the Annual interest on our National
Debt. In the face of our financial responsibilities alone, is this the time
to repeal the Ontario Temperance Act or relax a single one of its restric-
tions upon waste of money and man power) To every question on the

Judgment In Rev v Metcalfe.
in the case against Dr. Metcalfe. of
Bayfield, for violation of the 'Medical Act
by practising in Ontario without a license,
Police Magistrate Reid gave judgment
last week, convicting the defendant of a
breach.ot the Act and imposing a fine of
125 and costs. The evidence disclosed
that Dr. Metcalfe. after treating a case,
sent a statement of charges to the On-
tario Workman's Compensation Board.
This statement the magistrate held to be
a bill or account showing hope of reward.
Council for the prosecution stated that
the Ontario Medical Council did not
desire to be in any way unfair to Dr.
Metcalf. but insisted that he
take out a ce tificate under either the
Ontario or the Dominion Medical Coun-
cil; that he is a resident of Bayfield for
much of the time. and his practising is
said to keep any other doctor from
settling in Bayfield. The Doctor's
ability is undoubted. and he could easily
become qualified and takeout a certificate
to practise in Ontario.
