It is omcially announced by the Admiralty that the aviatoA were picked up In latitude 50.20. longitude 29.30, having alighted close to the little Danish steamer Mary, owing re a stoppage of circulation In the water N pipes between the radiator and, the water pump. The airplane. a Sopwith machine, wait not salvaged. The first report of the aviators since their famous "jump-off" last Sunday come when the Mary, which was bound from Norfolk to Aaarhuus, rounded the Butt of Lewis Sunday and wigwag- ged the fact that she had Hawker and Grieve aboard. "Saved hands of Sopwfth air- plane," was the signal. 0. "Is it Hawker?" was the Question sent out by the Bags from the Butt, which is the most northwesterly point of the Hebrides group off Scotland. "Yes," laconically replied the Mary. The Admiralty immediately sent out a fast torpedo-boat d.- stroyer In an endeavor to intercept the Mary and take off the aviato"a. After several hours word was Bashed that the destroyer had come across! the steamer and transferred Hawker ! and Grieve, and wan taking them to Thurso, on the northern coast of. Scotland. The news of the rescue has elec- trified all Britain. Eight destroyers, after a thorough search of the At- lantic for 300 miles from the blab coat, had given up the quest. and there was practically no hope that the airmen were alive. But the for- lorn hope that the aviators might be picked up by some craft without wireless was realised. The Danish steamer. Mary. crawling along at nine knots, was the Dicky vessel, and her brief message to the watchers at the Butt of Lewis as she proceed- ed on her way past Scotland, left the publice to speculate wonderingly over the details of the airmen's adventures. Nothing except some great battle ham excited London more than the unexpected tidings. The public was disposed to question whe- ther the first report could be trusted, and the Admiralty statement that It was taking measurea to verify the report Indicated doubt, which the Wooleun's message dlspellpd. Mrs. Hawker. wife of the aviator, received news from the Mary early Sunday morainpat tier home at aur- burton and posted a notice outside her home, reading: Mr llawker has been found. He is on the boat Mary bound for Denmark." A crowd of vlllegers soon gathered and showered Mra. Hawker with con- gratulations. The one person In England who had always held hope was Mrs. Hawker. She always maintained that Providence would protect her man, and. though she received condolences from all classes of people, including the King, she said Sunday that she had never ceased to believe that some time and in some 'way her husband would come back. The London Dally Mall, who of- fered a purse of 850.000 for the Bret flight by a heavier-than-air craft acmes the Atlantic Ocean. will gfye Hawker and Grieve a conaolatlan prize of 15,000.
