The Legislature has commenced to

The reply of the Premier was that the
Government is issuing the commission it-
self and that no other counsel would be ap-
pointed except Mr. Peter White to as
sist the commission. . The commis-
sion would only investigate the matters
specifically charged by Mr. IJewart, and
the public accounts committee would be
an avenue whereby Mr. l.ewart could
secure whatever mfotmation he sought
relating• to the accounts. Mr.
Dewart supported Mr. Proudfoot in his
demand for representation by counsel.
but it is unlikely tnat this will be granted.
A bill to regulate the rale of shares,
bonds, etc.. has been introduced by the
Attorney General. The bill appoints a
commissioner to examine into the kind of
shat'es which promoters desire to place
upon the market. 1t is expected. how-
ever, that this bill will fall through on
account of the opposition which etas de-
veloped to it throughout the country.
The Attorney -General said that the
principle of "blue-sky" Iegiglation had
been endorsed by a great number of
competent judges, but when it came to
drafting a bill the difficulties had been
found almost insurmountable.

NOTES
The Government has at last accepted
the argument of Liberal members to re-
gard to permitting women to take seats
in the Legislature if elected. and also
permitting them to be elected to munici-
oaI office. At the lime of the passing of
the Franchise Act of 1917 giving women
the right to vote .in O,.tario 1 mvincial
elections the Literals emphasized the
logic of foliosing this up by permitting
these new voters to represent the people
if so desired. The Liberals could not
suppress their mirth at this fresh evi-
dence of the Government's pettiness in
voting down Liberal proposals and after-
wards adopting them as their own.
The Government also introduced a bill
to enable farmers' wives to become mem-
bers of school boards.
Estimateg to the tune of over $3,000,-
000 were passed during the week. Two
intert sting items were *10,000 for medi-
cal and dental inspection in public and
separate schools, and $214,000 for techoi
cal education. The items were closely
criticized, but went through without any
particular friction.
Mr. Proudfoot, the Liberal leader,
again opposed the double salary for J. A.
Ellis in connection with the new housing
scheme. Mr. Ellis already receives a
salary as member of the Ontario Railway
and Municipal Board.
A change in the truancy laws will be
effected by means of a new -bill respect-
ing school attendance, under which
authority to app int truant officers is
transferred from the police commissioners
to the school boards. '

eolidated rural schools was brought in by
the Minister of Lands. Forests and
Mines. The bill is not compulsory in
any way, but grants local option to rural
achoOls in the matter of consolidation.
A grant of $100,0110 has been voted for
meeting the problem of transportation of
pupils.
An interesting bill has for its object
the development of cntntllunity halls and
athletic grounds in the rural districts of
the Province. The Government will
make a grant of 'went) Ave per cent. of
the coat of constructing a re mmunity hal
up to a maximum of $2;000.

Farming Is Big Business
Farming is "big business" of the biggest kind. Canadian farms yielded $650,000,000 in exports of agrit'tiltural
products last year—nearly $100,000,000 greater than the manufactured exports for the same period. This, in ad-
dition to the huge amount of food consumed at home.
The modern farmer equips himself not -only with the latest information as to his "trade," but with a broad
grasp of world's affairs. His place of business must be made worth living in, not only for himself, but for his wife
and children, for they are his partners, in a sense, which holds good in no other "business concern." The most
valuable information to him, therefore, is that which tells of prices for his products.
The Toronto Daily Star prints information daily, clearly and accurately. The market reports are from
Toronto, Chicago, and Winnipeg, and cover cattle, grain, dairy products, vegetables, hides, and wool.
In addition The Toronto Daily Star carries daily the news of the world for that day—presented by an im-
pressive array of special correspondents. Home news, too, bright, crisp, well-written. Big events writ-
ten about in a big way, and printed 90 that "grandma can read it."
The Toronto Daily Star Is Useful and
Interesting to Farmers
There is a real department for "Mrs. Farmer," a Woman's Page, which reflects things which women are inter-
ested in from Woman's standpoint. There are elean "comics" for young and old, bedtime stories for little Folks,
and dltasmaifng hints for the mothers. The Toronto Daily Star is a safe and profitable visitor to invite into any
home. The farrier "needs it in his bnsineas"i his family needs it for their education and enjoyment.
