Straughan was visited bystheir friends in
goodly number on Friday evening, when
they gathered to wish them well on their
journey' through life and presented them
with a beautiful mantle clock and an
address conveying the good wishes of
their many friends.
Rev. R. J. Ross was called to his
father's hone near Empro owing to the
illness of his father.
Several heavy horses are changing
hands, at gond pr•ces.
Pte. Ernest Thompson was in our vil-
lage on Tuesday tor the first timepsince
his arrival home from the front. He
is Iokiog well. He lost half of his sec-
ond finger and his hand was injured by
shrapnel. lids many friends are glad
to have him with them avain.

RECEPTION TO RETURNED SOLDIERS. -
On Monday evening last a reception was
tteld in the sctWokaom of Nile church in
honor of two returned war heroes - Gun-
nar Harvey Pentland. son of Mr. and
Mrs. J. H. Pentland, and Patrolman
Crane Mannall. an Old Country man
who had lived here four or five years be-
fore he enlisted in the 161st Battalion.
The latter bears the mark of his army
service in the loss of his right foot. Rev.
J. W. Hisey acted as chairman of the
gathering, which filled the room, and a
.very interesting program was carried out.
including addresses by Reeve Young of
Colborne, Reeve Bailie of West Wawanosb,
Councillor Currey and Mrs. J. Hethering-
ton, readings by the Misses Margaret
and Edna Rivers, a solo by Mise Ma -
1 whinny. and duets by the Misses Smith
i and Miss Mabel Smith and Master Alvin
Rutledge. Gunner Pentland was pre -
+tented with a wrist -watch. the gift of
Nile Sunday school, the presentation be-
ing made by Mrs. William Watson on be-
half of of her father. Mr. Robert Me-
1'twain. secretary of the school, who un-
fartunately was unwell and unable to
take his part. An address to the return
heroes was read by Miss Plunkett, and
they replied with thanks for the kind
reception that had been tendered to them.
Mr. Pentland also gave an interesting
review of his experiences at the front. his
1 able address beirg very greatly appre-
ciated. The [edits o. Nile Patriotic
League had prepared a lunch. and this
provided a delightful conclusion of a
memorable evening.
