some of the returning troops aboard the

Cadet J. A. Tom, son of P. S. Inspector
J. E Tom. returned on Monday last after
nearly four years' service with the Cana-
dian army. When war broke out Mr.
Tom was in his last year at the School of
Prac ical Science. Toronto, and finishing
his engineering course he enlisted as a
bombardier in the 27th Battery of the
Canadian artillery in March. 1915, at To-

in England and after a period of training
proceeded to France in January. 19111. be-
ing attached to the 23rd Howitzer Bat-

Canadian division. With this unit he en-
gaged in the battle of St. Eloi and all
the engagements for twenty•eight months,
being out of the lines only once 'as a casu-
alty, suffering from an attack of trench
tevq. During his time of service in
France Mr Tom received his corporal's
stripes and in May, 1918, he was sent to
England to train for a commission in
the artillery. Nith the rank of cadet ile
was attending the artillery sch'sll at
Camp Barden, near Alde'shot, when
hostilities ceased. Mr. Tom has very
little to say of his experiences while on
active service. except that the last
twelve months of the war was a very try-
ing period with the Canadian forces and
without doubt the casualties in that time
were greater than the total of the other
