Horticultural Society. .
The annual meeting of the Goderich
Horticultural Sctety, which was ad -

adopted and plans were laid for the com-

Wins a Carter Scholarship.
Ttic fifth award of the garter scholar-
ships has been made and the winners
in Iluroo county are: 1, Helen NI (Cars-

'These scholarships are provided for by
the will of the late J. 1. Carter of'Harnia
and are awarded in each of a number of
Ontario comities to the throe candi-
dates who obtain the highest marks on
the upper school exa,ninations of the
year. The values of the scholarships
are tospectively $110, tittO and $4). Mr.
Newton is to be cuogratulattd upon his
YIIeCeYN in winning his place near the
top of the list, especially as he wrote
under unfavorable conditions.
Hockey Meeting.
The meeting of' those interested in the
formation of a hockey club was held at
1 the town hall on Monday evening. The

Hawthorn.—Stothers.
A quiet but pretty welding took
place at the resdidence of Mr. and Mr..
Ktepben Stothers, Trafalgar sleet, on
Wednesday, when their daughter, Miss
Ruby Adele. was united in marriage to
Mr. Walter Hawthorne. The cere-
mony, which took place at high noon.
was performed by Rev. It. C. !Keine--
mid. of Knox church. T)ie parlor was
beautifully decorated for the occasion
with evergreens, carnations amt ochry-
santhwwum5. The bride, who was
given away by her father , was unat-
tended.. She was becomingly attired
in her travelling suit of taupe broad-
cloth, with bat to match, and carried a
bouquet of bridal roses. Miss Evelyn
McLean played the wedding march.
Mr. and Mrs. Hawthorne lett via the
G. T. R. on a short welding trip, after
which they will resile in Godericli.

Murdered at Prince Albert.
On November 20th Corp. Chas- Hors-
ley, a son of Mr. Richard Horsley. of ,
Clinton, was shot and killed by bandits at
Prince Albert, Sask. 1t appears that
Corp. Horsley, who is a member of a
battalion stationed at Prince Albert, had
been detailed to assist the Provincial
police in arresting a couple of d speradoes
who had been terrorizing the community,
and while in the performance el his duty
was shot and instantly killed. The trag-
edy took place on a steep bank of the
Saskatche,.an River and after Hcrafey
was shot his body rolled down he bank.
His compan'ons, a soldier and a Pro-
vincial constable. went down to bring
the i ody back and while this was taking
place the desperadoes escaped. Howeverf
sonie days later they were finally cap-
tured and they are now in Jail, awaiting
trial. Corp. Horsley was horn in Clinton
but had been a resident of the West for
about six years. Tile remains a ere in-
terred w ith military honors at Pt ince Al-
bert. Corp. Horsley was a nephew of Mr.
Thomas Warrener, of town.

The Jackson Manufacturing Co. were granted some
considerations when starting business here some years ago,
and are now willing to continue on similar terms They
feel that they have fulfilled their obligations in the past. Here

The Goderich Board of Trade heartily approves of re-
newing the terms of the old bylaw and has pledged its
support at the proper time to secure an extension of the
