E. R. Watson's Sudden Death. '
The sudden and unexpected death of
Mr. E. R. Watson on Monday evening
was a great shock, not only to his family
but to the whole town. for the deceased
was one of our best-known citizens and
had a host of friends. Mr. Watson. who
for some years had been Government
weighmaster at the harbor, about b
o'clock Monday evening was seized with
heart failure after mounting the stairs to
the workhouse of the Goderich elevator,
and expired almost instantly. For some
time his health had not been robust,
there being indications of heart weakness.
but he was about town as usual. and
tus death was utterly unexpected. The
ifuneral takes place today to Maitland
cemetery. A further reference to the de-
, ceased citizen will be made in next week's
'Signal.

SIR, -Noting the discussion in regard to
coal, and the claim of so many parties in
Goderich that they cannot burn soft coal
in their stoves nor. furnaces, we have been
requested by Mayor E. R. Wigle to g.ve
our experience in burning soft coal.
tieing raised in a eoft coal district, where
the people never thought of usirte other
than soft coal, and only within the last
few years being where anthracite coal was
used, we very naturally drifted into the
use of soft coal•last winter, and we found
that by leaving the draughts open to the
chimney we were able to get very good
results in a hot furnace and alio in a
range. The draughts should always be
open before the lire -door is thrown open
for retooling your erre. allowing the
smoke to pass off freely, and the fire
should only bt very light. Do not at-
tempt to 011 furnace or range with soft
coal as you would with hard coal, for when
it once ignites at wall burn through to the
top very quickly. and you will have Ole
danger of burning nut your Move end fill-
ing it with ash. that you should prevent
by keeping the fire lower. You will still
receive a great heat without a heavy heel
of fire.
Your ash pan and grates should he
kept well cleaned of ash; ranges and fqr-
fleece to be kept cleaned out frequent/0e,

soot, as there will naturally be mere loot
from soft coal than there will from hard
coal. The% can rte done by sweeping them
down with the brushes made on purpose
for cleaning stoves and furnaces, and the
flues can be kept clear by burning a wad
of paper, rolled up tightly. saturated w,Ih
