A. Richard- son Geta the Hat. After being delayed for some time by unfavorable ice conditions. navigation opened here all of a sudden on Sunday with the arrival of two ships and the departure of two of the boats that had wintered here. To the steamer G. A. Richardson be- longs the honor of being the first ship to enter the local harbor this season. Con- sequently when she left on Tuesday morning after discharging her cargo Cap- tain J. T. McCarthy carried with him the hat presented by the Mayor to the cap- tain of the first boat arrival of the sea- son. The Richardson carried 101,000 bushels of wheat. Within a few hours of the arrival of the first ship i he steamer Valcartier came in with a cargo of 217.000 bushels of oats and about 38,500 bushels of flax. As flax is worth $4.50 per bushel even this small amount is worth quite a bit of money. 1 he steamer Spokane arrived on Mon- day with 180.000 bushels of wheat. All these boats encountered many miles of ice. but had no trouble in getting through. The first of the boats that iein- tered here to leave was the steamer Saurian. which cleared for Fort William at daybreak on Sunday under the com- mand of Captain A. Pyette and Chief En- gineer Isaac Boyden. It had been ex- pected that this ship would go to Sarnia. but the ice was a) had at the lower end of the lake that she was ordered north. This year Captain Harold Hudson ie in charge of the steamer W. D. Matthews, which kin several hours after the Sarnian. also going up the lakes. Mr. W. Reid is chief engineer. Yesterday aft. moon the barge Mary McLaughlin was brstght across to the putt side of the harbor and It is expected that she will be towed up the lakea by one of the boats now here. ■ ■ 11■ ■ ■ ■ M ■ ■ ■ ■ IN ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ i■i ■ ■ ■ ■ B ■ DIRECT IMPORTERS GODiRIIICK ■ ■I MSS NMI >K<R1R'■* ■■■1R******** R■■■Br1RIKKIARX■**■*1R*K*. i Extra special inducements to make a clean sweep of the Coat racks.
