DR. STRANG TO -tri. C. I. 110AND.

Acknewiedgmeot of lbs Presented's
Made on Hie action' from the Stair
At the regular monthly meeting of the
Collegiate Institute trustee board on
Thursday last, the following letter from
Dr. Strang was rrad and ordered to be in-
scribed in the mantes of the board:
April 3, 1915.
TW fiord of Truster
o/ th. Collegiate Institute.
GENTLILosr',-Although i was informed
soon after your February meQing of the
very kind and acceptable way in which
you had decided to mark my retirement
from the staff of the Collegiate Institute,
1 thought it best to defer my acknowl-
edgment of the fact. Having now re-
ceived from your representatives a cheque
for the honorarium of 8500, and a finely
engrossed copy of your resolution, 1 wish
to thank you heartily for your kindness,
and to express my grateful appreciation
of your generous recognition of my work
and influence as a teacher. The cheque,
1 may say frankly came at a very oppor-
tune time. and the testimonial 1 shall be
glad to leave as a highly valued heirloom
to my family.
Looking back over the years that have
passed since September, 1871, when,
without application, but on the recom-
mendation of my predecessor. 1 was ap-
pointed principal of the Goderith Gram-
mar School, I cannot help feeling, that I
have been honored and rewarded tar be-
yond my deserts, and that much of the
credit that has come to me was largely
due to the favorable conditions in whidta I '
was placed. I was fortunate in having
from the first the confidence and support
of the board. and the feeling that, what-
ever changes might take place from time
to time in its membership. it would, as a
whole. irrespective of political, religious or
personal considerations deal fairly with
the teachers in its employ, and se* only
to promote the best interests of the School.
I was fortunate, too, in having the loyal
and hearty support of my colleagues, to
some of whom. especially Miss Charles
and Mr. Moore, much of the success of
the school was due; and, lastly, l was for-
tunate in having for our earliest Univer-
sity students such men as McGillivray,
Robertson. Elliott, Crassweller, Swanson,
and others, who would have brought
credit to any principal and any school.
It is naturally very gratifying to me
to feel that after so long a period of har-
monious relations with the board, my
colleagues. my pupils and my fellow -
teachers throughout the Province, I am
privileged to carry with me into retire-
ment these evidences of their goodwill and
esteem,
In conclusion, 1 need hardly assure you
that, though no longer on the staff of the
Goderich Collegiate Institute, I shall con-
tinue to feel a warm interest in its prog-
ress, and shall be glad at any time to
further Its interests in any way I can. !
Again thanking .LU . collectively and
iadneidual:S, 1 resiBM. gentlemen.
Yours sin cewly,
HUGH 1. STRANG.
The presentation to Dr. Strang on be-
half of the board was made a few days
previous by a committee composed o
Dr. A. Taylor, Principal Hume, respec-
tively chairman and secretary of the
board. and Mr. H. J. A. MacEwan, a
former pupil of Dr. Strang.

AN ASHFIELD OLD BOY.
Dr. Matthew Blake Is Member for North
Wlasigsgrs the House of Commons.
In one of his letters from Ottawa
1 UMW* MOURN, i10 . "aang set“ tunic
of the new pmemberi, mentions the mem-
' ber for North Vi'innipeg as follows:
"Some of the Ina/nista sat on the
Otiposition side at the beginning because
the attendance was more numerous than
the chairs. Among them, the first day,
was a gentleman of whom one said that
he was the typical. prosperous French-
Canadian. His Latin darkness and his
pointed beard, the general aspect of re-
tlective distinction which pervaded his
form attracted a speculative attention.
A shrugging shoulder and a pair of out-
stretched palms seemed to belong to the
time when he should say, 'Monsieur
L'Orateur: Je desire - -.' But ap-
pearances are deceiving. He was born
on a farm in Huron county. He belongs
to a family which counts among its
ancient scions the most illustrious British
admiral who was first a soldier of the
Ironsides. He has a blessed sense of
humor, which much meditation upon the
tariff cannot abate. Ile has been a
Conservative, with intellectual reserva-
tions towards some things which have
been done in that great name in the city
whence he appear,. When he was in-
troduced to Ernest Lapointe, the giant
from Kamouraska, an able man who also
dearly loves a juke and then some -
Lapointe said. '1 am delighted to meet a
new man from Winnipeg. You resemble
Henri Bourassa, Dr. Blake; and if you
don't buy a razor we shall change your
name.' And the pair of them, the
French-Canadian who looks like a bluff
Yorkshireman and the other Canadian
who might have come straight from 1.'Av
enue de L'Opera, sat down like old friends
to find out how it is the Almighty has
made so few bad Canadians."
Dr. Matthew Blake is a son of Ash-
field; his birthplace being near Lucknow.
Ile attended Goderich Collegiate Insti-
tute perhaps twenty-five years ago, and
has had a successful career as a
medical practitioner in the city of Winni-
