HONORARIUM TO DR. STRANG.

in Recognition of Eminent Service
At the inaugural meeting of the Col-
legiate Institute hoard, held on February
6th and adjourned to the nthinst., the
reappointments were announced by the
secretary of Dr. Emmerson, by the public
school board; Rev. J. )r- Ford, by the
town council. and Mr. W.' L. Eliot. by the
county council, as members of the board.
Dr. A. Taylor\tas re -appointed chair-
man for the ensuing year.
The following tri ees were appointed
members of the proty committee: Dr.
Emmerson, Dr. Mack •rl, W. L. Eliot
and Rev. J. E. Ford.
The following were a.• "rated as the
supply committee: I1. MacEwan,
honorarium was unanimodsly'carried un-
der the following motion:
"That, in consideration of the long,
faithful, and eminent service rendered by
Dr. H. 1. Strang to the G. C. 1. and in
the interests of education in the commun-

Much-lot and anyone in need of wood
could he supplied. There was some dis-
cussion as to whether any one person
should be allowed to have more that one
cord ul the tows wood, and finally this
was left to thediscretion of the town
clerk. through whose hands all the orders
for the wood go.
Councillor Davis, who is a stickler for
having things kept tidy and presentable,
wanted to know whose duty it was to
look after the town hall, which. he said,
should be kept "half • respectable." The
Alayor said it was the duty of the police.
Councillor Davis thought it would be a
good idea to gjve the place a grand clean-
ing up this spring, employing for the pur-
pose any person needing relief from the
town.
C)uncillnr Wilson entered a mild pro-
test in behalf of punctuality. tie would
like to see the meetings of the council
commence promptly at ti o'clock. Even
the Reeve had been behind time that
evening, the first occasion in three years
he had known him to be late.
The Reeve explained that he had been
taken suddenly ill shortly before the time
of meeting, which accounted for his un -
punctuality on this occasion. Under the
circumstances •the Reeve's record still
stands.
Mayor Wigle reported "his attendance
at the Hydro -radial meeting at Toronto
R
the previous Tuesday. Although nothing
could be done at present in the way of
constructing -now -,...radial lines, the idea
was to keep the project alive and in read'•
ness for operations after the war.
Referring to the appointment of an
agricultural representative for the county,
His Worship said he would like to see a
garden .at every home, and under the
direction of the representative better
results might be obtained.
Deputy Reeve.Clark said the Depart-
ment of Agriculture at Toronto was ready
to send an expert gardener here at any
time to advise as. to such matters.
Councillor, Davis and Wilson were ap•
pointed a committee to act in conjunction
with the Horticultural Society in working
out a plan for increased production. .
A motion was adopted that all unpaid
taxes of 1915, 1n16• and 1917 be collected
forthwith.
Councillor Robertson made some re-
marks on the subpect of assessment. He
said there were complaints that some 01
the assessments were unfair and he
hought it might be well to make a reform
and get rid of complaints by assessing all
property up to its value. This would
allow of a lower tax rate, which would be
a gourd advertisement for the town.
His Worship remarked, "As ye sow, so
shall ye reap." The town was now reap-
ing the harvest of such undertakings as
the Wheel Rigs and the West Shore Rail-
way. One thing thatwould help out the
situation would he the payment of taxes
in two instalments, which would make a
saving in interest paid by the town.
There was a somewhat general discus-
sion of assessments and taxes, after which
the council adjourned.
