West Huron Board of Agriculture.
Meetings under the' auspices of the
West Huron Hoard of Agriculture wttl he
held next week as follows: Holmesville,
Monday; Auburn, Tuesday; 1)ungantwn,
Wednesday; Kintail. Thursday.
It is also announced that judging classes
in live stock will be held at St. Helens
Match 5th and tlth.
A Thaw at Last.
A break in the severe cold weather 01
the past two months has at last come.
A heavy rain set in Friday night and
with continued mild weather the snow
hasbcen going rapidly. The country roads
are very much broken up and travelling is
difficult, one result being the dislocation
of the rural mail service for several days.
The mild weather came very oppor-
tunely fur the "heatless days" ordered by
the Fuel Controller. Business was gener-
ally suspended on Saturday and Monday
1 in obedience to the official order.

Students of the (',oderich Collegiate
Institute took part in a Province -wide
essay competition, the subject on which
they were asked to write being: "How
the purchase of Victory war bonds would
help the purchaser, Canada and the Em-
pire." Three prizes were awarded for each
school, the winners here being: 1st, Alex.
Hume. awarded a silver medal: 2nd,
Grace Pinder, a smaller silver medal, and
3rd. Helen Cooke, a bronze medal. The
three prize-winning essays have been sent
to Toronto to be judged in comparison
with others from all Darts of the Province.

Chapter. 1.O.D.E., will he held in the

The Women's Institute.
The regular monthly meeting of the
Goderich branch of the Women's In-
stitute was held at the home of Mrs. A.
D. McLean, Elgin avenue, on Thursday
afternoon, February 7th, with thirty-six
members in attendance. Some time was
taken up with business relating to the
pancake social, from which the sum of
$95.59 clear of all expenses was realized.
Motions were made that $10 be given the
Children's Aid Society and $23 to the
Goderich boys who are prisoners of war
in Germany. The members heartily
thank the Big Mill for flour, the Rebekah
Lodge for tables and chairs, Messrs.
Brophey and Edwards for chairs and Mr.
J. J. ISI,cEwen for dishes.

Boston hospital. Mrs. Macpherson lived
in Goderich for a time, but has latterly
been staying with her married daughter
in Boston.

Faith that Saves.' A cordial welcome is
extended.
Patriotic Benefit.
Under the very unfavorable conditions
of Monday evening last skating was
rather a patriotic duty than a pleasure,
but the public responded most generous -
1y to the call and the proceeds of the
evening amounted to $110.21. Expenses
paid there will be about $30 to be
divided between the Red Cross and the
prisoners of war fund. The good music
by the hand, which kindly donated its
services, was much enjoyed by the skaters
as well as by the spectators. The
"sweet tooth' wasmuch in evidence. as
the gixodly amount of homemade candy
had all disappeared before the lurch
hour. This successful event was carried
out under the auspices of the Eureka
1 Bible class of Victoria street chnrch.
The pastor, Rev. J. H. Osterhout, will
preach next Sunday in Victoria street
Methodist church on the following topics:
Morning, '•Consecration and Service:"
evening, "Companions of the Way."
Sunday school and Bible class at 3
o'clock. A cordial wekome to all ser-
vices.
The anniversary of North street Metho-
dist Sunday school will be held next Sun-
day. The services will be conducted by
the pastor. Rev. Dr. Rutledge. Morning
subject: "The Religion of the Child."
Evening: "Life's Greatest Quest," a
word to the youpg. The Sunday school
scholars will aasi-t in the musical service.
The Men's Sunday Club meets at 10 a. m.
in the church parlor. Subject for discus-
sion: "Are the temptations of young
men greater today than a quarter of a

A Case from Seaforth.
On Wednesday And Thursday of the 1
week a Targe number of Seaforth people
were in attendance at tbe,court- house,
giving evidence in the suit of McLennan
vs. the corporation of the town of Sea -
forth. John McLennan, the ptaintitT,
who lives at Seaforth, complained of alt.
open drain adjacent to his premises into
1 which. he alleged, sewage from a large
tile drain was allowed to pass, causing a
bad odor and constituting a danger to
health, and also undermining his land and
1 buildings. He asked for an injunction
and $500 damages.- - The corporation'
' claimed that the dram complained of was
not intended to be used as a sewage drain
and if it was so used hy any citizens it
was without the knowledge and consent
of the corporation. F. C.. Richardson, of
Mitchell. was counsel for the plaintiff and

(tion. Judge Dickson heard the evidence
but has not yet given a decision. .
Former Goderich Girl Wedded.
A pretty wedding took place in St.
Paul's church, Simcoe. on Tuesday, when
Beatrice Corienne, younger daughter of
Mrs. J. C. Harrison of Simcoe, formerly
I of Goderich, was married to Thomas Ed-
ward 'Tables of the headquarters staff.
Welland Canal force, of St. Catharines.
The ceremony was conducted by the Rev.
Mr. Scott Fulton. The bride was at-
tended hy Miss Mildred Smith of St.
Catharines, and Mr. 1). Greenwood- of
St. Catharines acted as ' groomsman.
Later Mr. and Mrs. babies left for Pitts-
burg and New York, and on their return
they will live at 111 ()Mario street, St.
Catharines. Many Goderich readers,
who knew the bride in her young girl-
hood. will wish her much happiness in her
new sphere.
