WILL HAVE MAJORITY OF ABOUT
FIFTY IN NEW HOUSE.
Nova Scotia, Print Edward Mand and
Quebec Give Laurier Majorities -
Ontario and the West Almost Solid
for Union -Liberals Will Predom-
inate in New Parliament.
The Union Government was sustained
in Monday's polling by a substantial ma-
jority. l'he only members of the Govern-
ment defeated were lik, ndin and Sevigny,
the former Nationalist representatives m
the Borden Cabinet. The majorities in
most cases were very large, owing to the
sharp division of opinion on the conscrip-
tion Issue. Ontario and the West went
almost solidly for the Government, while
Quebec and the Maritime Provinces gave
Laurier strong support. The vote by
Provinces is as follows, the ttgures being
subject to slight alterations when returns
are complete:

Salt Water FDWIId When Sinning
rnr.'I, N- Ila,
Among the mauy unsolved myster• '
les concerning the interior of Mother;
Earth few are more fascinaling t'ban ,
those brought to light by certain sur• I
Prising experiences of drillers of deep i
wells. Although many people are not
aware of the fact, a large proportion
of the wells sunk to depths twlow
1,000 feet encounter large bodies of
salt water, the flow of which may be
so great that the driller remarks that •
he has struck the Gulf of Mexico Of
some other immense body of salt
water. The salt water may even Dow
up out of the mouth of the well. but
more commonly It rises in the well to
a height of several bundred'd'Yeet
above the bottom, and its supply i-
so great that only a pump of enorm-
ous capacity can keep the well
empty.
Where does the salt water come
from' It 1s often assumed that It
sus some immense cavity or system
of crevices, but in tact it is generally
contained in some bed of unusually
porous rock. like sandstone, In which
the pores, though minute, have an
aggregate volume or capacity of mil-
lions of cubic Leet.
But one question is no sooner an-
swered than another one, more dim -
cult. arises, and the question now la:
How did the salt water get into the
porous rock' Has rain water soaked
tar down in the earth and found
some bed of rock salt which 1t dis-
solved and thereby became salty; or
had the salt water some source far
within the earth, from vehieh It has
arisen toward the surface, or is it the
water of ,some ancient ocean that
filled the pores of the sand and mud
of its bed, which in ages gone- by
became buried under sand and mud
that gradually accumulate,/ on the
ocean bottom"
The shells of sea anisate teunC In,
limestone and other hard rocks at
'the heart of the continent show
clearly that the ocean, In some or
several remote ages, covered a large
part or the country, and It appears
extremely probable that the • salt
water found In the deep wells is-
. really fossil sea water entombed in
the sands and muds of former eons
and now brought to the surface by
the drill, which In- innumerable
places in this aitd other countries Is
being sunk to depths of 2.000. 3,000,
and 4,000 feet,. end even down to
depths of nearly 7,500 feet.

VOTING AT THE FRONT.
One Poll Clerk Wounded While
Guarding Ballot Boxes.
CANADIAN ARMY .HEADQUAR-
TERS IN THE FIELD, Dec. 18. --No
less than 87 per cent. of the total
vote of the Canadian corps had been
polled by 8 o'clock Friday night.
Some units have already polled one
hundred per cent. of the ballots,
while the general experience to date
is that the number of men refusing
to exercise the franchise is almost
negligible In specific units, although
th,.aggregate may be appreciable. •
T ection officers have taken
their elxes with them on the tram-
ways behind the lines, and have
voted men as they worked. In the
same way they have gone through
the front-line trenches, giving men
In the firing line .their opportunity
to exercise the franchise. One poll
clerk has been sertoutly wounded, a
presiding officer has` been sent down
to the base as a casualty, while one
gunner voting beside his gun was bit
by shrapnel.
Polling booths have been damaged
by shell fire and by bombs, but theti.,
has been no serious interruption to
the election work, and, above all, no
Interference with the actual war op-
erations.
