pi them. This is a great mistake, as, to
the observant person, there is an infinite
variety in all these. There are at lea t
seven distinct varieties of politicians in ins muff
Canada. A botanist might classify Mem
in this way
CONSISTENCY - An excellent variety
very choice and rare, bearing a white
flower. Always true to type. Very
hardy and will grow in any climate, but
not profitable.
ANTI-HEARST--A very old variety,
but dying out. Not popular with the
ladies. Found everywhere, but does not
thrive where there is too much water.
TRUE BLUE - A rapid grower and sure
bearer, but fruit is only liked by three
who like it. Blossoms about July 12th,
and fruit ripens November 5th. First
grown in Ireland.
SAFETY FIRST -An expensive va-
riety to keep and does not yield much
fruit. Likes a rich soil and thrives
best in shady places. Grows luxuriantly
along the lines of some of our railways,
and in the vicinity of munition plants
and cold storage warehouses.
N AT IONA L I ST -A comparatively new
variety found principally in Quebec Prov-
ince. Very erratic,: flowers sometimes
red and sometimes blue. Experimental
farm at Ottawa regards it as a noxious
weed that must be eradicated. Fruit
small and bitter, and of no value.
LIBERAL- A very old variety im-
ported originally from England. Will
not thrive unless suckers are kept care-
fully pruned out. In Canada the blos-
som is red surmounted by a white plume.
Found in every Province in Canada but
becoming somewhat rare in Ontario.
Fruit excellent.
UNION -A recent hybrid of unsettled
type.Flowers blue with red streaks.
All the rage this season. A very showy
plant but has yet to bear fruit to estab-
hsh a permanent popularity. Much used
in Ottawa to decorate offices.
-Onlooker, in The Wingham Advance.

On Guard at the Reading Gate!
It is a fine thing to guard our homes
against alien soldiers of whose purposes
we are all aware. But it is also very im-
portant to guard them against other in-
sidious foes that creep in under the dis-
guise of friendly entertainers to plunder
and destroy the cherished ideals, the lofty
standards, the clear views that have given
the hours its character.
If you will familiarize your young people
with the best reading, they will not be
likely to crave what is inferior and dem-
oralizing. The Youth's Companion is a
powerful influence in awakening a taste
for what is best in reading. Itis on guard
at the reading gate! Nothing cheap.
mean, or hateful pastes its challenge. But
neither does the crabbed and dull and
austere. Cheery idealism is The Com-
panion's countersign. Put it on guard at
your reading gate!
The Companion is 12.25 a year. If you
do not know it, by all means send for
