Fire Inquiry.
A public investigation into the recent
tire at the Goderich Manufacturing Co.'s
factory will be opened at the court house
on Wednesday. November 'alai. at 9.30
o'clock a. m. The investigation will he
conducted by Mr. George F. Lewis, Pro-
vincial Deputy Fire Marshal, of Toronto.
Former Uolborne Girl Wedded.
Many readers of this paper will 'be
pleased to read the announcement of the
marriage of Miss Golden Gilders, for-
merly of Colborne township, to Mr. Le
Mar Sheeder at Detroit, Mich., on Octo-
ber 3rd. Mr. and Mrs. Sheeder are now
touring through Canada, visiting the prin-
cipal cities en route to the Pacific (-oast.
They will spend the winter m Oregon and
California. returning through the States
to Detroit, where they will re 'ode.
Death of R. A. Gatenby•
An old resident of Goderich passed
away oo Sunday. in the person of Mr.
Robert A. Gatenby, Essex street.. The
deceased was born eighty-four years ago
at Brighton. England. and when twenty
years of age came to America. For a
number of years he was a farmer in Da-
kota. He carne to Godench in 1873.
He was twice married, his first wife dy-
ing fifteen years ago and leaving live
daughters and one sun. The second wife
survives him. The funeral took place on
Tuesday afternoon to Maitland cemetery.

At the regular meeting held on Satur-
day last the public library board de-
cided. after communicating with the
boards of Stratford, St. Marys. Wingham,
Clinton. Exeter, Listowel, Hensall and

The board has recently placed on the
shelves a targe number of books; to which
will be added more before the close of the
year. The public are invited to give sug-
gestions a non-fiction books. the fiction
having been brought up to the latest
issues and many renewals having been
made.
Mr. J. Elgin Tom was appointed to
represent the board at the library insti-
tute to be held at Guelph on the 15th
inst.

The adjourned annual meeting of the
Goderich Horticultural Society was held

on Friday evening last. the president, Mr.
John Straiton. m the .chair. The
treasurers report showed a membership
of 133, and with the membership fees,
the Legislative grant of itr2 and the
county grant of $2b the Soct:ty wi
have, after paying incidental expentses, a
balance of about 1240 for the purchase of
plants or bulbs for distribution among

• Last Monday afternoon and evening
the Wilting Workers' Mulsrun Band niet
in the Baptist church Parlors for a so-
cial tithe. From 4.30, games were en-
tered into until 6.30, when supper was
served. Immediately after supper the
officers were elected kw the following
year. They are as follows: President,
Cameron Yule; vest -president. Edna
Brownlee; secretary, Miss E. Donaldson;
treasurer. Sydney Donaldson;organist
and convener of the music aveprogram
committee, Julia Beevers. When this was
completed. a time was spent un the en-
joyment of an impromptu program in
which all took part. Before dismissing.
the pastor read a farewell address to Miss
Hazel Marshall, who is leaving for Wind-
sor, expressing the sincere regrets and
beat wishes of i the B and. The Band
Teets at 4.30 o'clock on the first and
third Wednesdays of each month.

Another Old Resident Departs.
The call to which all must answer came
with great suddenness to Mr. Alexander
Inglis on Friday evening last. Ile had
been apparently in his usual health, and
was sitting on a chair in his home when
without warning the vital spark fled,
death being due to heart failure.
Mr. Inglis wasCborn at Hawick, Rox-
boroughshire. Scotland, and caste to this
country with his parents in early infancy,
in the year 1441. The family lived for a
few years at Galt and afterwards on a
farm on the Lake Shore road near Kin-
cardine. in Men, his father having pur-
chased Piper's woollen mill here, r.
Inglis came to Goderich, and with the
exception of a period of fourteen years
spent at Wingham he had ever since been
a resident of this town. He was an ex-
pert machinist and for a number of years
was engaged at the Doty engine works.
He was the eldest of a family of seven, of
whom only two now survive: Mrs.
Henry Clark. of St. Louis, Mo., and Mr.
I Walter Inglis, of Woodstock. Mrs. Inglis

Mr. Inglis was a staunch 'Presbyterian
and for over eighteen years, up to the
time of his death, he was a member of the
session of Knox church. a position he had
filled also for several years at Wingham.

side. Though past the allotted span, he
maintained his physical and mental abili-
ties to a remarkable degree. and olily five
years ago he undertook and carried out
with great enjoyment. in company with
his daughter, a trip to the land of his:
nativity.
