A,ound Town. II MOTEU MUSICIAN
The disquieting report of the' in-
spector of the protection of 8 few
weeks back has, w far as we oath
gather, received but scant attention
from the town council. A committee
wee appointed for the purpose of as-
oertaioing the cost of an electric, ham-
mer for the fire alarm bell and also
for linking up the firemen's houses
with the fire hall, but this Is not by
any means the part that needs meat
attention. In a town of this wise we
need an alarm system and equipment
that will be efficient to meet the more
serious conflagration that nosy break
out. Delay is dangerous, and a ques-
tion of so serious a nature, and in face
of the warning that was given, should
receive the vainest attention of the
town fathers.

Wait and See,
The problem of the high cost of
living is causing the thrifty housewife
many an anxious moment and to all
appearances there does not seem to be
any sign of relief, although the ap-

Welcome News for "Bookworms,"
The decision of the public library
board to issue a catalogue of books
contained in the library will be
greeted with enthusiasm by lovers of
books. Not only will it terve a useful
purpose in the selection of a book, but
we can get a better idea of the differ-
ent subjects from which to choose.
Besides action, the library contains
many volumes that are well worth
reading and from which a reader can
learn something to his or her ad-
vantage.,

"UNITED EMPIRE" REBiJILT.
A Steamer that Used to Be the Pride of
the Great Lakes.
At the foot of Virginia Street, in
Milwaukee, can he seen a handsome
craft, if the word handsome can be
rightly used. It is a ship with w his-
tory, a ship that for years was hailed
as the finest on the Great Lakes. Her
shipbuilders were proud of her When
she was launched, just as the present
shipbuilder is today as he surveys the
ship he reconstructed.
The steamer United Empire was a
floating palace when she was launched
at the yard., at Sarnia some years ago.
Every timber of the ship was selected
With the greatest care and to make
mote staunch the original builders
lined her with steel sheeting. it took
two years to build that fatuous Cana-
dian steamer and the work which the
shiphuildere, Dyble & Perry, had done
on her was in evidence at the time of
her reconstruction.
When the Saronic, as the United
Empire came to he called after the re
build in--Collingwood, was, burned at
Oockburn island last summer and sold
to the highest kidder some vt•sselmen
shook their heads when they heard
that she swam to he rebuilt. She waa
teiwed to Mitaaukeo and Captain Gus
T. Clausen was given the charge of
rebuilding her. From a burnt bulk
tins stately ship was reconstructed Into
nee of the finest barges on the Great
Lakes under bis supervision. The
place where the ship was rebuilt gave
an aspect of the olden time* when
pitch, oakum and tar were enlisted
with delight by the regular visitors of
the shipyards.

Kincardine, Ont., Jody 5.—A moat
astonishing cure of rheumatism and
eczema has been repot t -d here, and
Mrs. Ray in enthusiastic in telling her
many friends how cure was effected.
Rheumatism and eczema frequently
Iogethpr, and in this case caused
the most keen distress imaginabie. All
the swelling and puffiness resulting
from many years of rheuutatirm have
disappeared, and there is not a pain or
an ache left.
Mr. (f. H. Ray, R. R. No. 1, Kincar-
dine. Ont„ writes : "Mar, Ray has
been using your Kidney -Liver Pills.
She was very bad with rheumatism
and eczema, and had had that fearful
itch for twenty-seven years, It' was
simply terrible what she suffered. I
persuaded her to try one dollar's
worth of Dr. Chase's Kidney -Liver
Pills. She is now on the last box, and
let me tell you she scarcely knows
herself, she is so free from ,loth theey°e
diseases. All the swelling and puni-
ness caused by the rheumatism hits
gone away, and she has gone down in
weight 1811 pounds. She never bas an
ache nor pain, hilousness nor siek
headache all three months. She often
says herself, •How glad I aro that I
know what to do instead of paying
dort•irs so much to make me worse.'"
There in only one way that the
poisons in the blood can be clea ed
away and the cause of pains and se es
removed, and that is by the health tl
action of the kidney,, liver and how-
' els. Because Dr. Chase's Kidnity-Liver
Pine act directly and specifically on
these organs and erasure their activity
they remove the cause of rheumatism
and other dreadfully painful end fatal
diseases. One pill a dose, 25 cents a

ANIMALS IN WOODLOTS
Permissible only ,n Rarest Cases—
Ground Fire Damage
One of the most Important steps
to be taken in the care of the woodlot
1s Its protection from fire and animals.
Fire should never be allowed to run
through it, for not only does this des-
troy seedling trees and Injure large
ogee, but It also destroys the litter
affd vegetable matter on the ground
and leaves the Boll exposed to the dry-
ing Influence of the sun and wind.
Pasturing animals in the woodlot Is
a great hindrance to the proper devel-
cpment. Cattle, in addition to eating
eft the tops of small trees, destroy
the undergrowth and thus allow the
sue to act on the soil and grass and
secede to establish themselves. The
result 1s the larger trees, begin to
slowly die at the top and deday sets in.
in woodlote that have in the past
been neglected and now contain many
more or less open and grassy spots
it may be advisable to pasture hogs
for a time in the fall. These animals
by rooting about stir up the soil and
put it In good condition to receive
the seeds when they fall from the
trees and thus a new growth of young
trees Is started.

Ings what a gratifying change would
take place. Instead of thousands of

rld itself each day of all the waste
which It accumulates under our pres-
ent mode of living. For every ounce
of food and drink taken into the system
nearly an ounce of waste material
must be carried out, else it ferments
and forms ptomaine -like poisons which
are absorbed Into the blood.
Just as necessary as it Is to clean
the &ales from the furnace each day,
before the flre will burn brlgbt and
hot, so we must each morning clear
the inside organs of the previous day's
accumulation of indigestible waste and
body toxins. Men and women, whether
